  • This is UnReal

    Kathleen Battles•ARTICLE•Feminist Media Studies•2019•Referências: 5

This essay examines the discourse of the initial industry promotion and popular press reviews of the Lifetime series, UnREAL, and argues that in seeking to justify the program as “quality,” this discourse disparaged Lifetime TV as feminized popular culture. This was accomplished in two ways. First, in seeking to legitimate its brand, Lifetime effectively denigrated its own brand history, including its programming and audiences. Second, commentato…

  • Sexual Identities and the Media

Wendy Hilton-Morrow, Kathleen Battles•BOOK•Sexual Identities and the Media•2015•Citada por: 11

Sexual Identities and the Media encourages students to examine media as a site of negotiation for how people make sense of their own and others’ sexual identities. Taking a critical/cultural approach, Wendy Hilton-Morrow and Kathleen Battles weave together theory, synthesis of existing research, and original analysis of contemporary media examples in order to explore key areas of debate, including: an historical context for contemporary GLBTQ rep…

  • Exchange and interconnection in US network radio

Joy Elizabeth Hayes, Kathleen Battles•ARTICLE•Radio Journal International…•2011•Citada por: 1

This article offers a revision of the dominant reading of the 1938 War of the Worlds radio play as an unparalleled example of media power and radio artistry. Analyses of both the sound-text of the broadcast and audience responses collected afterwards show that War of the Worlds – like a number of other radio programme genres – explored the possibility of two-way communication in national network radio. The play celebrated radio's ability to coord…

  • Between a Rock and a Slippery Slope

    Wendy Hilton-Morrow, Kathleen Battles•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•2011•Referências: 20

This article analyzes the television series The Book of Daniel, a program that shows in full relief the ways that current discourses of religion and sexuality converge to produce a particular type of gay subject. This subject, primarily male, might be understood as bound through an innate identity and commitment to the sanctity and reproduction of heteronormative institutions such as the church and state, which renders him assimilable into the so…

  • Gay characters in conventional spaces

Kathleen Battles, Wendy Hilton-Morrow•ARTICLE•Critical Studies in Mass…•2002

This paper explores how Will & Grace, which has been heralded in the popular press for its positive representations of gay men, situates the potentially controversial issue of homosexuality within safe and familiar popular culture conventions, particularly those of the situation comedy genre. This paper draws on feminist and queer theory to examine the liabilities of relying on these familiar situation comedy conventions, demonstrating how the pr…
