  • Integrating legacy survey data into GIS‐based analysis

    Open Access•Giannis Apostolou, Konstantina Venieri et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2024•Citada por: 1•Referências: 24

Surface archaeological survey has been widely established as the principal method for the regional study of Mediterranean diachronic landscapes. Before the introduction of GPS and digital, GIS‐based recordings in the late 1990s, survey projects employed analogue recording strategies (e.g. personal notebooks, printed forms and cartographic materials) resulting in low‐precision spatial datasets. These archives, termed here as legacy survey data, ca…

  • The prehistoric site of Oued Beht, Khémisset, Morocco

    Open Access•Cyprian Broodbank, Giulio Lucarini et al.•ARTICLE•Libyan Studies•2024•Citada por: 1•Referências: 28

This report presents the first in-depth publication of preliminary data from Oued Beht, northwest Morocco, a remarkable site initially identified in the 1930s and now newly investigated. It is based on fieldwork undertaken in 2021–2022 (photogrammetry, survey and excavation), and associated study and analyses. Oued Beht is shown to be a large site of ca. 9–10 hectares in main extent, with many deep pits and convincing evidence for a full package …

  • Oued Beht, Morocco

Open Access•Cyprian Broodbank, Giulio Lucarini et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2024•Citada por: 5•Referências: 27

The Maghreb (north-west Africa) played an important role during the Palaeolithic and later in connecting the western Mediterranean from the Phoenician to Islamic periods. Yet, knowledge of its later prehistory is limited, particularly between c. 4000 and 1000 BC. Here, the authors present the first results of investigations at Oued Beht, Morocco, revealing a hitherto unknown farming society dated to c. 3400-2900 BC. This is currently the earliest…

  • Potential of deep learning segmentation for the extraction of archaeological features from historical map series

    Open Access•Arnau Garcia-Molsosa, Hector A Orengo et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2021•Citada por: 9•Referências: 10

Historical maps present a unique depiction of past landscapes, providing evidence for a wide range of information such as settlement distribution, past land use, natural resources, transport networks, toponymy and other natural and cultural data within an explicitly spatial context. Maps produced before the expansion of large-scale mechanized agriculture reflect a landscape that is lost today. Of particular interest to us is the great quantity of…

  • New developments in drone‐based automated surface survey

    Open Access•Hector A Orengo, Arnau Garcia-Molsosa et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2021•Citada por: 3•Referências: 3

This paper presents new developments on drone‐based automated survey for the detection of individual items or fragments of material culture visible on the ground surface. Since the publication of our original proof of concept, awarded with the Journal of Archaeological Science and Society for Archaeological Sciences Emerging Investigator Award 2019, additional funding has allowed us to implement a series of improvements to the method. These aim t…

  • Automated detection of archaeological mounds using machine-learning classification of multisensor and multitemporal satellite data

    Open Access•Hector A Orengo, Francesc C Conesa et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2020

Significance This paper illustrates the potential of machine learning-based classification of multisensor, multitemporal satellite data for the remote detection and mapping of archaeological mounded settlements in arid environments. Our research integrates multitemporal synthetic-aperture radar and multispectral bands to produce a highly accurate probability field of mound signatures. The results largely expand the known concentration of Indus se…

  • A brave new world for archaeological survey

    Open Access•Hector A Orengo, Arnau Garcia-Molsosa•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2019•Citada por: 26•Referências: 4

Archaeological pedestrian survey is one of the most popular techniques available for primary detection of archaeological sites and description of past landscape use. As such it is an essential tool not just for the understanding of past human distribution, economy, demography and so on but also for cultural heritage management and protection. The most common type of pedestrian surface survey consists of fieldwalking relatively large tracts of lan…

  • Arqueología del paisaje en el entorno de «Lauro»

Open Access•Arnau Garcia-Molsosa, Arnau GARCÍA MOLSOSA et al.•ARTICLE•Zephyrvs•2015

The link between the place-name Lauro and the ancient history of the eastern part of Vallès region (Barcelona) is a constant throughout historiography. In this paper, this ancient Lauro serves as a guide to present the results of a research conducted in a small area, which due to archaeological data complexity has been of great interest to study the dynamics of territorial structuration in one of the first rural areas conquered by Rome outside th…
