  • Borderline personality disorder and non-consensual sexting by gender and sexuality

    Open Access•Alexander J Mussap, Elizabeth M Clancy et al.•ARTICLE•Current Psychology•2025

There is evidence that psychosocial difficulties associated with borderline personality disorder (BPD) extend into online interactions. However, it is unknown whether this includes online interactions in the form of non-consensual sexting perpetration and victimization, and if so, which BPD symptoms are responsible, how these symptoms influence sexting, and the extent to which this influence differs by gender and sexuality. Therefore, a convenien…

    Lee N Taube, Alexander J Mussap•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•2024•Citada por: 4•Referências: 40

Despite the risks of rejection and discrimination, "coming out" can be an important psychological milestone for transgender (trans) and gender diverse people (TGD). We evaluated the dimensions of identity that predict coming out to family and friends, and the role of social support in explaining the psychosocial benefits associated with coming out. An online survey was completed by 951 TGD adults, 516 (54.3%) who identify as gender binary (164 tr…

Open Access•Li Shaun Huang, Pascal Molenberghs et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•2023•Referências: 59

Difficult childhood experiences can lead to the development of early maladaptive schemas (EMS) that cause emotional and behavioral problems later in life. The present study examined the role of cognitive distortions in mediating relationships between EMS and aggression in adults as a function of sex. Participants were 59 women ( M age = 34.7 years, standard deviation [ SD ] = 8.0) and 86 men ( M age = 39.3 years, SD = 13.2) who completed the Youn…

We conducted an experiment with 185 women and 118 men 18–40 years old into the effects of viewing thin-idealized, fitspirational, and plus-size bodies sourced from Instagram on their body image and body-change cognitions. Analyses revealed post-exposure changes in body image, outcome evaluations (the desirability of the ideal body), and normative beliefs (beliefs about the use of diet/exercise by role models). In each case, thin and fitspirationa…

    Open Access•Alexander J Mussap, Elizabeth M Clancy et al.•ARTICLE•Gender Issues•2022•Citada por: 1•Referências: 10

Cyberbullying and non-consensual sexting are prevalent and potentially harmful online behaviours. However, little is known about the attitudes and beliefs that underpin these behaviours in ciswomen and cismen and the extent to which they explain the online experiences of trans and gender diverse (TGD) people. A sample of 638 ciswomen, 722 cismen, and 146 TGD adults 18 to 66 years of age (M = 23.27, SD = 3.66), completed a survey of online perpetr…

Felicity Ho, Alexander J Mussap•ARTICLE•Psychology of Sexual Orientation…•2019•Citada por: 2

The Gender Unicorn is a popular infographic used to educate people about gender diversity. We adapt the Gender Unicorn for use as a measure of gender identity-the Gender Identity Scale (GIS)-in which participants report level of identification with each of three genders: female/woman/girl, male/man/boy, and other gender(s). We administer the GIS to a sample of 269 self-identified trans and gender diverse adults and use a latent class analysis of …

Canonical correlations revealed a potentially problematic "thin, quick, and easy" association of methods and motives, as well as a more healthful "thin, natural, life-style" association.
