Lesbian feminists who began their work in the 1970s probably share my mixed feelings about and attitudes towards Queer Theory: curiosity, envy, indignation and occasional agreement. My reading about two notable Victorian women, Jane Carlyle and Geraldine Jewsbury, has uncovered no evidence that they were lovers. But their intense friendship, which flourished for twenty-five years and ended only with Jane's death, has not had attention it deserves. Such friendships as theirs will not be fully understood until lesbian feminists write more history and biography. Jane Carlyle was forty, and wife of famous writer Thomas Carlyle, …
