  • Understanding the Politics of Pericles around 450 BCE

Open Access•Carl Hampus Lyttkens, Henrik Gerding•CHAPTER•Ancient Greek History and…•2018

Perikles is usually seen as a great statesman and clever leader of the Athenians. In the mid fifth century BC, he seems however to have been in serious political trouble and may well have been in danger of losing the political struggle against his opponent Kimon. The fact that his incentives changed considerably at this point in time seems to have escaped attention in the literature. In contrast, we see Pericles’ rational responses to fierce comp…

  • Making direct democracy work

Open Access•Carl Hampus Lyttkens, George Tridimas et al.•ARTICLE•Constitutional Political Economy•2018•Citada por: 5•Referências: 13

The specific way the Athenians set up their democracy presents both theoretical and empirical challenges. Decisions were taken by majority vote in the Assembly. To keep politicians in line, the Athenians first used ostracism, which however was replaced by the graphe paranomon around 415 BCE. The latter provided that anybody who had made a proposal in the Assembly could be accused of having made an unconstitutional suggestion, bringing a potential…

  • The Effect of Schooling on Mortality

Open Access•Petter Lundborg, Carl Hampus Lyttkens et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•2016•Citada por: 8•Referências: 65

By using historical data on about 50,000 twins born in Sweden during 1886-1958, we demonstrate a positive and statistically significant relationship between years of schooling and longevity. This relation remains almost unchanged when exploiting a twin fixed-effects design to control for the influence of genetics and shared family background. This result is robust to controlling for within-twin-pair differences in early-life health and cognitive …

  • Economic Analysis of Institutional Change in Ancient Greece

Carl Hampus Lyttkens, Carl Hampus-Lyttkens•BOOK•Economic analysis of institutional…•2012

This book presents an economic analysis of the causes and consequences of institutional change in ancient Athens. Focusing on the period 800-300 BCE, it looks in particular at the development of political institutions and taxation, including a new look at the activities of individuals like Solon, Kleisthenes and Perikles and on the changes in political rules and taxation after the Peloponnesian War

  • Institutions, taxation, and market relationships in ancient Athens

    Open Access•Carl Hampus Lyttkens•ARTICLE•Journal of Institutional Economics•2010•Citada por: 6•Referências: 34

This paper explores the institutional and economic development in ancient Athens from around 600 BC into the fourth century, a period during which the Athenians experienced oligarchy, tyranny, a gradually evolving but eventually far-reaching male democracy, followed by a return to more influence for the elite. Concomitantly, economic life changed qualitatively and quantitatively. Self-sufficient farming gradually gave way to market relationships …

  • Effects of the taxation of wealth in Athens in the fourth century B. C

    Carl Hampus Lyttkens•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Economic History…•1992•Citada por: 4•Referências: 8

In the fourth century B.C., Athenians were often accused of avoiding their civic obligations and of concealing their wealth.1 These attested cases show that economic behaviour in classical Athens could be affected by taxation. The purpose of the present study is to systematically explore the economic incentives resulting from the taxation of wealth. The first issue is the effects of the property taxes on the relative attractiveness of different a…

A critical appraisal is made of an article in this journal by Dabelko and McCormick. In the article, the authors try to estimate the opportunity cost of defence. With simple tools from economic analysis it is shown that their methodological approach reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of this important and useful concept. In the final section, some difficulties encountered when attempting a correct empirical analysis of opportunity costs are b…
