A Reorientation of Worldview
We report on a Canadian partnership-based, multiyear, multisite project that examined the diverse experience of father involvement. Based on a sample of 215 fathers, an analysis team identified key themes of father involvement. In this article, the authors report on a qualitative analysis of how a diverse sample of fathers perceives the influence of their own children on their identity and development. The data were collected within a large partnership-based, multiyear, multisite research project carried out in Canada as a community-university collaboration. This paper examines the underlying assumptions associated with two key areas of adoption legislation where there is variation across jurisdictions and calls for change. These legislative issues are consent and openness. Based on intensive, qualitative interviews with 32 men, this study reports on meanings of time for fathers from intact families with young children (under age of 6). Men's experience of time provides some insight into why they have been slow to increase their time commitment to family activities, even when their wives enter labor force. Patterns of adolescent pregnancy resolution have changed dramatically over the past 30 years. Contrary to popular belief, there has been a decrease in the fertility rate among adolescents. In the United States, the fertility rate for adolescents aged from 15 to 19 has dropped from 97.3 per 1000 in 1957 to 51.7 in 1983 (Vinovskis, 1988). This research examines the attitudes and perceptions that adolescents have of adoption. Of particular interest is how these attitudes might help to explain the decline in the choice of the adoption alternative as a way of resolving an unplanned pregnancy. Although participants appear to have generally favorable attitudes toward adoption, there were high levels of uncertainty about how parents and friends would feel about adoption. In relation to …

It is estimated that approximately 3% of pregnant adolescents who carry to term will place their infant for adoption. Birth mothers who place for adoption have higher socioeconomic indices and are less influenced by a negative social network than are those who keep the child.
