An Aristotelian Theory of Family
Our purpose is to apply Aristotelian theory to family studies. We introduce Aristotle's work through his debate with Plato over the meaning of family and its role in society. We then explain key concepts in Aristotelian theory, including virtue, practical wisdom, telos, interpretation and evaluation, agency, and human development. Intergenerational Assistance to Adult Children
This study considers how the number of sisters and brothers affects the flow of aid from older parents to adult children. Using data from the 2004 Middletown Kinship Survey ( N = 338), the authors find that the aid adults receive from their parents varies by the gender composition of the sibship. Adults with more sisters tend to receive less assistance from their older parents. This holds true across a range of helping behaviors, including financ…

This paper proposes the term familification to describe one type of gentrification: the process of neighborhood change by families moving into a neighborhood. This study, drawing upon in-depth interviews, document analysis, and ethnographic observations, focuses on an urban familification program—one city's attempt to benefit families by restricting participation in its downtown housing programs. Male Kin Relationships
In a qualitative interview study of narratives grandsons told about their grandfathers (n = 14), we found evidence that grandsons perceived the role of grandfathers to be generative on several dimensions. Our analysis centered on the influence grandfathers had on the meanings grandsons made about fatherhood. All seven generative work domains, along with nine concepts describing grandfathers' generative efforts (consciousness of the family's linea…
Family Status and Motivations to Run
Family structure influences motivations to run. Drawing on qualitative, in-depth interviews with 33 amateur marathon runners, we investigated how people in various family situations talked about why they run. We found that while there were no major differences in stated motivations to start running or to run marathons, there were differences among the various family statuses for why people continue to run. The meanings of fatherhood conveyed in grandparent stories told by adult grandchildren vary both by the sex of the grandchild and by the sex of the grandparent who figures in the story. The present study suggests, in contrast to community dissolution theories, that community is maintained through a dialogue between ideological commitment and cooperative action within a cultural framework. The research follows up on a classic rural community study series, that of Lowry Nelson's Mormon villages. Replicating Nelson's ethnographic methods, the author reevaluates the earlier findings and extends the data by several decades. Nelson's …
