  • What do(es) you mean? the pragmatics of generic second person pronouns in modern spoken Danish

Open Access•Torben Juel Jensen, Frans Gregersen•ARTICLE•Pragmatics Quarterly Publication…•2022

In modern Danish, the most frequently used pronoun for generic reference is man , developed from the noun man(d) ‘man’. Recently, though, the second person singular pronoun du has gained ground, in parallel to similar recent developments in other languages. A large-scale, longitudinal study of the LANCHART corpus of spoken Danish has documented a rise in the use of generic du in Copenhagen (and later in the rest of Denmark) during the period from…

  • Foregrounding of subordinate clauses by word order

Open Access•Marie Herget Christensen, Tanya Karoli Christensen et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2020•Citada por: 1•Referências: 14

In modern Danish, main clauses have the word order X>Verb>Adverb (i. e., V2) whereas subordinate clauses are generally characterized by the "subordinate clause" word order Subject>Adverb>Verb. Aelbrecht et al. 2012) functions as a foregrounding device, signaling that the more important …

  • Diffusion of language change

Open Access•Marie Maegaard, Torben Juel Jensen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Sociolinguistics•2013•Citada por: 8•Referências: 28

The paper focuses on motivations for the spread of new features within a speech community, and on the trajectories the changes follow during diffusion. One set of data represents language use, and here focus is on two changes which have been going on in Danish over the past 40 years, one grammatical and one phonetic. The other set of data are results from a nationwide speaker evaluation experiment which tests the subconscious attitudes to differe…

  • Past participles of strong verbs in Jutland Danish

Open Access•Torben Juel Jensen, Marie Maegaard•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Linguistics•2012

The article presents a real-time study of standardization and regionalization processes with respect to the use of past participles of strong verbs in the western part of Denmark. Analyses of a large corpus of recordings of informants from two localities show that the use of the dialectal en form of the past participle suffix has been in decline during the last 30 years. The en forms are replaced by three other forms, one of which is (partly) dia…
