Local descent groups that all have the name – Rashāyidah – are found in many places in the eastern Arab world. There is evidence that at least some of these groups originated in northwest-ern Arabia, where some of their ancestors lived centuries ago. National discourses about mansaf, the most well-known dish in modern Jordan, tend to obscure its use in feasting. This study views mansaf as a “feasting food,” comparable to the dishes used in other societies and in earlier historical periods to recruit and reward allies, produce and reproduce differences in status or rank, and repay social debts. Most scholars of tribal organization among the Bedouin of the eastern Arab world utilize a two-dimensional, hierarchical model of Bedouin kinship that represents only relations of descent and affinity. Almost no research has been done on the impact of physical handicaps on family relationships in the Arab world. Fieldwork carried out in the north Jordanian town of Kufrinja sheds light on coping strategies adopted by parents of handicapped children. The Kaʿba, Gender, and the Rites of Pilgrimage
This article examines the role gender plays in the pilgrimage rites in Mecca at the turn of this century. I argue, as a student of local cultures rather than a scholar of universalistic Islamic beliefs, that portions of the hajj at that time had a special significance for Arab Muslims in and near the Hijaz.
