Knowledge and attitudes about mental health among older immigrants from the former Soviet Union to Israel and their primary care physicians
Previous studies have documented a high prevalence of psychological distress and mental illness among older immigrants from the former Soviet Union (FSU) in Israel. Yet, this population rarely seeks help from mental health providers. The present study aimed to identify beliefs and attitudes about depression and anxiety among older immigrants from the FSU treated in primary care, and among their primary care physicians, who were also FSU immigrant…
The Experience of Fatigue in Breast Cancer Patients 1–12 Month Post-Chemotherapy
The study explored the experience of fatigue, its effects and ways of coping with fatigue and the role of family and social support among breast cancer patients. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 breast cancer patients stages I-III, aged 34-67, who were up to one year after the termination of chemotherapy. Two main themes emerged: "Being imprisoned in the body of an 80-year-old," focuses the fatigue experienced by younge…
Care Coordination and Continuity of Care in Oral Anticancer Treatment
Introduction: Patients receiving oral anticancer medications (OAMs) are at increased risk for fragmentation and lack of continuity which can potentially significantly hinder their ability for self-management. Factors such as the complexity of the regimen, the need for special safety precautions, occurrence of side effects, and drug-drug interactions require close collaboration between the oncology and primary care providers and the alignment of t…
Between modern and traditional values
BACKGROUND: Israeli Arab women under-utilize mental health services. OBJECTIVES: The present study evaluated the use of alternative services for dealing with depression and anxiety among Israeli Arab women and primary care providers. MATERIAL: Four focus groups with primary care patients and two focus groups with primary care providers were conducted. Constant comparisons were employed in order to identify major themes related to informal help-se…
Arts in medical education
Our research concentrates on two key topics in medical humanities: arts and narrative for deepening compassion in medical education, and using abstract paintings to improve reflective competence through faculty development workshops. The authors designed and delivered workshops to enhance physicians’ competencies in each of these areas. The first workshop used figurative paintings and narrative both to enhance understanding of the sufferer as wel…
The use of abstract paintings and narratives to foster reflective capacity in medical educators
Reflective capacity is integral to core healthcare professional practice competencies. Reflection plays a central role in teacher education as reflecting on teaching behaviours with critical analysis can potentially improve teaching practice. The humanities including narrative and the visual arts can serve as a valuable tool for fostering reflection. We conducted a multinational faculty development workshop aiming to enhance reflective capacity i…
Teaching reflective competence in medical education using paintings
Medical authorities around the world are increasingly focusing on the role of reflection in enabling doctors to mature as practitioners. Reflection has been recognised as an important competency in medical education, valuable for effective communication, good physician–patient relationships and accurate gathering of clinical information.1 Although different methods are used for teaching reflection, it remains a challenge for every medical educato…
Exploring association of spiritual perspectives with complementary medicine use among patients with Type 2 diabetes in Israel
Primary care physicians need to be aware of a possible association between religiosity and CAM use in patients with diabetes. Physicians may consider adding questions on CAM and religiosity to routine clinical interviews in order to enrich their dialog with diabetes patients
Attitudes of Arab-Muslims toward integration of complementary medicine in primary-care clinics in Israel
We hypothesize that the two communities differ due to later modernization in the Bedouin society that may highly regard and pursue medical science while forsaking traditional and herbal medicine
Attitudes of Arab and Jewish patients toward integration of complementary medicine in primary care clinics in Israel
