After providing a background of the social and political organization of the Ibibio in southeastern Nigeria (some two million population), this paper reviews the function and status of chiefs and elders (used interchangeably here) in precolonial, colonial and postcolonial times. A wave of witchcraft accusations spread through the Ibibio region during 1978 and 1979. Ibibio beliefs about witches are described and the reasons for this crusade are analyzed. Some hypotheses about witchcraft accusations are tested, and the data are compared with similar phenomena in other societies
Witchcraft among the Ibibio of Nigeria
In November 1978 a witch-purge crusade led by Edem Edet Akpan (alias Akpan Ekwong) took place among the Ibibio people of the Cross River State in Nigeria. Edem claimed that all the evils which afflicted the Ibibio were attributable to the malevolent forces of witches and that he possessed supernatural powers to detect witches.
