From legitimate to illegitimate violence
Stanley Milgram's Obedience to authority experiments are widely known to have demonstrated the human proclivity to follow violent orders coming from a legitimate authority. The present paper examines the extent to which Milgram's participants, during the obedient phase of their sessions, did in fact follow the full set of instructions that was given by the experimenter: a recursive sequence of procedures in a fake laboratory experiment on “Memory…
The Frequency and Composition of Interpersonal Tension in Stanley Milgram's Obedience to Authority Series
The paper examines the frequency and composition of interactional tension between participants and the experimenter in 136 sessions across the four Conditions in the ‘Obedience to authority’ series closest to the classic ‘New Baseline’. Analysis shows that (1) interactional tension was widespread and regularly occurring during the sessions; (2) whilst not identical, obedient sessions and the obedient phase of disobedient sessions were similar in …
Spatial spillover effects associated with the Sweden Democrats' growing support
Research on the growing support of radical right parties cannot ignore the role of spatial, contextual effects and geographical proximity. One important spatial factor is the halo effect, which suggests that a radical right party is more likely to perform well in a homogeneous electoral district surrounded by ethnically diverse areas. Voter behaviour is influenced by certain neighbourhood effects, which can be spatially distant, originating from …
Misconduct by private security officers and trust in the police
Previous studies have shown that police assaults reduce trust in the police among the group affected by the incidents. As the phenomenon of plural policing emerges and the actors in policing become intertwined, blurring the boundaries between them, analysis of the impact of security guards’ actions becomes warranted. This paper investigates the impact of two security guard incidents on trust in the police in Sweden, a high-trust society, using th…
Travel Patterns and Motivations of the Hungarian Gay and Lesbian Community
Tourism plays a key role for gay people, as it is not only a way to escape from work, but also a source of liberation and self-embracement. This role can be particularly valued in societies and political environments that are perceived as hostile toward this group. The present study examines the travel motivations and habits of gay and lesbian people, based on a questionnaire sample of 1473 respondents. The results show that for this group, but e…
Contextual factors influencing election results in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Electoral geography tends to focus on the impact of geographical context on electoral behavior recently and challenges the classical compositional approach. We analyze spatial contextual factors of the 2018 general elections of Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the linear regression models based on the fault line theory result in wrong estimations in several municipalities, not fitting into the national pattern. Using spatial modelling, it is confirm…
Giving the green light to sustainability
Nowadays, cities' involvement in sustainability efforts is becoming increasingly important. Of particular relevance are the horizontal networks and international initiatives that promote sustainability actions and help the participating cities to exchange knowledge and experience. Participation in such initiatives and the degree of involvement is largely determined by the political leadership of cities. This paper investigates the political deter…
Competing diversity indices and attitudes toward cultural pluralism in Europe
Purpose The purpose of this analysis is to collect and classify the most important diversity indices, outline the logical connections between them and answer the following question: How much will the results differ if the authors use different indices for explaining the same dependent variable (attitude toward cultural pluralism), and what kind of relationships are observable in the European societies? Design/methodology/approach The diversity in…
Electoral Geography of Bosnia and Herzegovina – is there anything beyond the ethnic rule
The majority of experts consider ethnicisation the defining factor in Bosnia and Herzegovina's political life. Our objective is to uncover what other factors affect party performance and what, if any, territorial pattern different from the ethnic one, can be drawn. We argue, based on quantitative analyses, that besides the "ethnic rule", other social cleavages (like the urban-rural one) with territorial patterns are also present in the country, t…
