Shifting foodways in Central Anatolia
First conclusions on Early-Middle Holocene ground (sand)stone production in the Eastern Sahel
Microbotanical analyses of dental calculus and caries occurrence at Neolithic Tepecik-Çiftlik, Türkiye
The transition to agriculture-based economies and sedentary lifeways during the Neolithic brought significant changes in oral health and diet. Despite the influence of physiological and cultural factors, the frequency of dental pathologies, such as caries and dental calculus, is a common consequence of carbohydrate-rich diets. Caries result from bacterial activity that transforms carbohydrates into lactic acid, leading to the demineralisation of …
Rhyolite grinding-milling tools in focus
Past societies have used various raw materials for making grinding-milling tools (GMT). These included rhyolite, a hard volcanic rock with a porphyritic texture and pores, which is suitable for grinding. Thus far, no experiments have been carried out involving use-wear analysis on rhyolite grinding stones, and more specifically on Neolithic GMTs made of this raw material. Therefore, in this paper, we present an experimental program designed to in…
The diet of settled Neolithic farmers of east-central Europe
The Shaqadud Archaeological Project (Sudan)
The authors present preliminary results from a new research project based in Jebel Shaqadud, Sudan. Their findings highlight the potential for this region's archaeological record to expand our understanding of the adaptation strategies used by human groups in arid north-east African environments away from rivers and lakes during the Holocene. Furthermore, they present exceptionally early radiocarbon dates that push postglacial human occupation in…
An Introduction to the Study of (Late) Prehistoric Ground Stone Artefacts in the Western Part of Jebel Sabaloka in Central Sudan / Úvod do studia pravěkých broušených kamenných artefaktů ze západní čá…
This study is devoted to stone artefacts made from raw materials that are valued for their hardness, tenacity, and texture. They were often ground, and some tools from this category were themselves used for grinding. In addition to shaping artefacts, they were employed in processing of food, crushing minerals and ores, or as parts of digging sticks. Changes in their functional composition generally signal significant subsistence, economic and soc…
BC). V souboru byly sledovány technologické kategorie štípané industrie, morfologicko-funkční skupiny nástrojů a spektrum využívaných surovin v rámci STK. Soubor artefaktů z obj. 37 umožnil detailnější studium postupu výroby při zpracování silicitů z glacigenních sedimentů. Na základě dílčích výsledků u jednotlivých kategorií a skupin ar…
How Were Neolithic Ditches Filled In? Deposition Study of Two Enclosures from Bohemia
The aim of this study is to analyse the correlation between finds and ditches, the duration of ditch fills, and the manner of the demise of Late Neolithic rondels (Kreisgrabenanlagen) in the Czech Republic. Two comparable long-term projects are discussed here: Kolín (central Bohemia) and Vchynice (north-west Bohemia). Qualitative, quantitative, and spatial analyses of the different categories of finds (pottery fragments, lithics, daub, and faunal…
