This paper examines the generally neglected place of Lorenz von Stein in the paradigmatic bifurcation of social theory during the nineteenth century. In his pioneering works on Primitive Rebels and Bandits, Eric Hobsbawm analyzed certain forms of rural banditry as primitive social protest.
