Microbe or Man? Alleged Mystery of the Grand Prince Yaroslav Vse-volodovich’s Death
Accounts of the same event appearing in multiple sources are a relatively rare phenomenon for the Classical Middle Ages. Fortunately, the death of the Grand Prince of Rus’ Yaroslav Vsevolodovich at the Ordu of the Great Khan Güyük’s mother in September 1246 is recorded in the report of the envoy of the Apostolic See to the Mongols, John de Plano Carpini, and Russian medieval chronicles. This has led many historians to generally accept that he die…
Oleg Ingvarevich Ryazanskii’s in Historical Sources and Historiography
There is very little reliable information in the historical sources concerning biography of Oleg Ingvarevich Riazanskii, a prince of the period of the Mongol conquest of the Russian lands and the establishment of the yoke of the Horde. In fact, in the oldest Russian chronicles and in the laater all-Russian annals it is only reported that Oleg, along with other Riazan princes, went to the river Voronezh to fight the Mongols in 1237, was released f…
Batu's Invasion
Starting from Nikolai Karamzin, the earliest reports preserved in the three oldest Rus' chronicles were the basis for the reconstruction of the events of Batu's invasion of Rus'. However, textual analysis shows a high level of literary borrowings in these chronicle texts, originating from the Byzantine historical writings and the Holy Scripture. As a result, the quality of these accounts as historical sources is undermined. The purpose of the art…
Apocalypse of the Thirteenth Century
Research objective: The idea has already been expressed that the eschatological image of the Mongols of Russian annalists, recorded in the Tale of the Battle on the Kalka River of 1223, after some time, through the reports of Dominican Julian and testimony of Archbishop Peter at the Council of Lyons in 1245, influenced the apocalyptic character of the Mongols’ Great Western Campaign in Latin Europe. However, it remains unstudied why the Russians…
The Thunder from the East
The article deals with the medieval book miniatures illustrating the invasion of Batu's armies in Europe in 1236–1242. Bearing in mind the postulated high symbolism of Medieval fine art, the author is interested in the figurative code of miniatures, in which the attitude of Europeans to the Mongol conquerors should be encoded. In this regard, a study of the related manuscripts, executed in different centuries, from the mid–13th to the mid–16th ce…
Depicting a Prayer before the Battle
In the note, the author focuses on the additional drawing made by an unknown reader on the miniature of the Old Rus’ illuminated manuscript of the Tale of the Route of Mamai . The drawing depicts the image of the Mandylion over one of the key scenes of the Tale: Dmitry Donskoy receiving the blessing and prosphoron from St Sergius of Radonezh. The author examines both, the text, that is illustrated, which cites the monastic rite of Panagia, and th…
