What is the Truth of Death and Dying? Reflections on Fulton, Foucault, and Finitude
This article highlights Michel Foucault's neglected insights regarding the social and discursive construction of death in contemporary Western societies. It also describes the limitations of Foucault's views, pointing out some of the key dimensions of death, dying, and resistance he overlooks because he downplays the agency exercised by human beings. Coming to Terms with Bodily Losses and Disruptions Evoked by Aids
This article uses interview data to examine (1) the prominent bodily losses and disruptions experienced by men with AIDS and (2) the effect these losses and disruptions have on friendships, work, and leisure activities. By focusing on these themes, the article illustrates some of the vexing self-challenges encountered by men with AIDS as their illness advances and alters their bodies and relationships. This paper utilizes interview data to explore the challenges to self confronted by men living with advanced symptoms of AIDS. Guided by a symbolic interactionist perspective, the paper highlights how these men (1) come to terms with debilitating health complications and a diminishing future; (2) offset the threats posed by suffering, dependence, and dying; and (3) fashion and solidify selves that extend beyond death.
