Divergent Macroscopic and Microscopic Patterns in Bony‐Fibrous Entheses Revealed by a Multidisciplinary Approach
Revealing Developmental Transitions in Perinatal and Infant Individuals Through Microanatomical Analysis
OBJECTIVES: Identifying signs of birth in perinatal human remains of past populations is challenging due to the lack of direct markers of this event on bones. This research aims to identify distinct events in humeral cross-sections microanatomy related to perinatal development and to integrate the findings into infant mortality trends. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sample consists of infants (N = 106) ranging from prenatal to 1.5 years, with microana…
Unlocking Adolescence
INTRODUCTION: The objectives of this investigation were to study puberty in medieval adolescents from northern Spain and use funerary archaeology data to explore the social implications of adolescence within this community. METHOD: The pubertal development of 37 skeletons (aged 8-25 years) from Marialba de la Ribera (León, Spain, 3rd to 15th centuries AD) was assessed, with 32 assigned a pubertal stage. Using this information in conjunction with …
Puberty in medieval Veranes
This study aimed to examine the pubertal development of medieval adolescents from northern Spain and to explore possibilities for increasing sample sizes and representativeness in other research of this type. Medieval skeletons with age-at-death estimations between 8 years and “young adult” (n = 222) from the archaeological site of Veranes (Asturias, Spain; 5th-14th centuries) were analyzed to determine puberty and menarche status. A single puber…
Yacimientos simulados y arqueología experimental como herramienta de aprendizaje en Arqueología y Paleontología
Experimental archaeology has had a wide diffusion in the field of research and dissemination in recent decades. However, its use in the generation of simulated archaeological models offers a resource of enormous potential to deepen the field of interpretation of the archaeological record. In this work, we present a first approach to archaeological simulations on an experimental basis with special attention to the models created in the LAEX-UAM. W…
How accurate are medical CT and micro-CT techniques compared to classical histology when addressing the growth of the internal rib parameters
Rib internal anatomy and its cross-sectional morphology inform about important biomechanical or even evolutionary aspects. Classic histological studies require destructive techniques that are reprehensible depending on the case (e.g., fossils). In the last years, non-destructive CT-based methods are contributing to complementing previous knowledge without damaging the bone. Even though these methods have been proved to be useful to understand adu…
Reconstructing the Biography of Children's Stone Bracers in the Iberian Peninsula
Perforated stone plaques, known as bracers, are found across late prehistoric Europe and many of them have been recovered in Bell Beaker funerary contexts, usually associated with adult individuals. Experimental, technological, and use-wear studies have determined that the bracers were both utilitarian and symbolic objects. Very few are found in children's graves, but examples are known in the Iberian Peninsula, two of which are presented here. T…
First application of a puberty estimation method to skeletons of young pregnant females
The objective of this study was to evaluate the pubertal status of skeletons belonging to young females who died while pregnant to better understand puberty, the attainment of reproductive capacity, pregnancy, and maternal and fetal mortality in the past. A method to analyze pubertal development in osteological remains was applied to three skeletons of pregnant individuals from different medieval Spanish cemeteries. Pelvic measurements, stature e…
The use and abuse of cinnabar in Late Neolithic and Copper Age Iberia
In this study, total mercury (THg) was analyzed in archaeological human bone from 23 sites dating to between the Middle Neolithic and the Antiquity. A total of 370 individuals from individual or collective burials was sampled, mostly using cortical bone from the humerus. These individuals were recovered from over 50 different funerary structures ranging from tholoi, pits, caves, and hypogea. Although cinnabar (HgS) is a likely cause of mercury po…
Mercury in archaeological human bone
Cranial vault thickness measurement and distribution
Cranial vault thickness is a widely studied variable in physical anthropology. However, direct physical measurements are difficult to assess in complete skulls, where the endocranial surface is not easily accessible for standard callipers. Computed tomography represents the best alternative, but is expensive and not always available for many field or museum samples. In this study we present a method for the measurement of cranial vault thickness …
Assessing pubertal stage in adolescent remains
Puberty in the Bronze Age
Puberty and adolescence represent a significant period of physical growth and maturation and a critical life stage in which children transition into adults within their societies. Numerous studies have observed a secular trend and have determined that puberty is now occurring earlier than in the past. This investigation represents the first application of a methodology for assessing the pubertal status of osteological remains to a prehistoric ske…
Can histomorphology enhance the analysis of cremated human bones in an archaeological context? A case from the Lagunita I archaeological site, Santiago de Alcántara (Cáceres), Spain
Reevaluation of 'endocostal ossifications' on the Kebara 2 Neanderthal ribs
External and internal ontogenetic changes in the first rib
OBJECTIVES: First ribs bear information about thorax morphology and are usually well preserved, compared to other ribs, in bone/fossil samples. Several studies have addressed ontogeny of the first rib by studying changes in bone microanatomy and rib morphology separately, but no studies have combined both approaches to study how internal and external changes covary during ontogeny. The aim of this project is to fill this gap in our knowledge. MAT…
