  • Purkait’s Triangle Revisited

Open Access•Mennattallah Hassan Attia, Mohamed Attia et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Sciences Research•2022•Citada por: 1•Referências: 2

Identification of unknown remains recovered from marine and terrestrial locations is a significant humanitarian problem. This investigation proposes a simple method applicable to fragmentary femora for a more refined level of ancestry and/or sex estimation. To that end, we re-examined Purkait's triangle which involves three inter-landmark distances between the traction epiphyses and the articular rim of femoral head. A large sample ( n = 584) fro…

  • Reconsideration of the Antiquity of the Middle Palaeolithic Footprints from Theopetra Cave (Thessaly, Greece)

    Open Access•Nina Kyparissi-Apostolika, Nina Kyparissi‐apostolika et al.•CHAPTER•Reading Prehistoric Human Tracks•2021

During the 1996 field season, four footprints were found in undisturbed deposits at the borders of squares Θ10-I10 at a depth of 3.5 m at the Theopetra Cave excavation site. The footprints lie adjacent to an ash horizon that has been dated to ca ~135 ka. Two footprints in the trail are complete and measure 150.4 mm and 138.96 mm in length. Based on modern European standards, these lengths would be consistent with young children aged between 2 and…

  • Using spinal activity-related osseous change in order to explore patterns of occupational stress in a Greek Contemporary Skeletal Collection

    Open Access•Dimitra E Michael, Sotiris K Manoli et al.•ARTICLE•HOMO•2020

Even though the relationship between occupational stress and entheseal changes has been extensively examined in modern skeletal series, less attention has been given in examining degenerative and plastic osseous change along the spine in relation to different professions. This paper attempts this investigation and is the first that explores the level of physical activity in female housekeepers of The Athens Collection. A sample of 65 adult skelet…

  • Exploring sex differences in diets and activity patterns through dental and skeletal studies in populations from ancient Corinth, Greece

Open Access•D E Michael, Constantine Eliopoulos et al.•ARTICLE•HOMO•2017

  • Using dental and activity indicators in order to explore possible sex differences in an adult rural medieval population from Thebes (Greece)

    Open Access•Dimitra Ermioni Michael, Efstathios Iliadis et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Review•2017•Citada por: 2•Referências: 59

Assessing the subsistence strategies of past populations; through their dietary and occupational patterns; could provide important information regarding social status and possible gender differences, especially in turbulent historical periods, as the one of the Crusader’s occupation in Greece (1204-1460 AD). Therefore, the human sample from Aghia Triada in Thebes (13th-14th c. AD) serves as the ideal skeletal material. Diet was explored through t…

  • Biometric sex estimation using the scapula and clavicle in a modern Greek population

Aimilia E Koukiasa, Constantine Eliopoulos et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2017

Human skeletal remains exhibit sexual dimorphism, which is apparent in adult living individuals as well. Researchers from forensic and osteoarchaeological fields have a growing interest in establishing metric standards for sexing by use of discriminant function analysis. The present study focuses on providing sex estimation metric standards using measurements from the scapula and clavicle in a Modern Greek sample (Athens Collection) consisting of…

  • Sex determination by three-dimensional geometric morphometrics of the vault and midsagittal curve of the neurocranium in a modern Greek population sample

    Open Access•M E Chovalopoulou, Maria-Eleni Chovalopoulou et al.•ARTICLE•HOMO•2016

  • Sex determination by three-dimensional geometric morphometrics of craniofacial form

    M E Chovalopoulou, Maria-Eleni Chovalopoulou et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2016•Citada por: 2

The purpose of the present study is to define which regions of the cranium, the upper-face, the orbits and the nasal are the most sexually dimorphic, by using three-dimensional geometric morphometric methods, and investigate the effectiveness of this method in determining sex from the shape of these regions. The study sample consisted of 176 crania of known sex (94 males, 82 females) belonging to individuals who lived in Greece during the 20(th) …

  • Sex determination by three-dimensional geometric morphometrics of the palate and cranial base

    M E Chovalopoulou, Maria-Eleni Chovalopoulou et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2013•Citada por: 2

The purpose of this study is to assess sexual dimorphism in the palate and base of adult crania using three-dimensional geometric morphometric methods. The study sample consisted of 176 crania of known sex (94 males, 82 females) belonging to individuals who lived during the 20th century in Greece. The three-dimensional co-ordinates of 30 ectocranial landmarks were digitized using a MicroScribe 3DX contact digitizer. Generalized Procrustes Analysi…

  • Reconstructing Late Bronze Age diet in mainland Greece using stable isotope analysis

  • Thalassemia

    Open Access•A Lagia, Αnna Lagia et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2007•Citada por: 17•Referências: 40

Differentiation of the genetic and the acquired anaemias, particularly in areas of the world where they may co-exist, has been a challenge for palaeopathologists for over 100 years. In this paper we present macroscopic and radiographic skeletal lesions that are associated with the thalassemias in a 14-year-old girl from a modern reference collection of the University of Athens. This individual is of known sex, age, cause of death, place and dates…

  • Periodontal disease in the Mycenean (1450–1150 BC) population of Aghia Triada, W. Peloponnese, Greece

    Open Access•Manolis G Tsilivakos, Sotiris K Manoli et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2002

This study investigates the incidence of periodontitis in a Mycenaean population unearthed at the cemetery of Aghia Triada (West Peloponnese, Greece) during the 1989–1997 field season. The material consists of 172 dry skulls. Demographic parameters of sex and age were difficult to be assigned due to the bad state of preservation of the skeletal material. The ratio was 50 males, 48 females, 65 unidentified and 9 children, and we estimated an avera…

  • Geographical differentiation of cephalometric data of a nomadic isolated Hellenic population (Sarakatsani)

    Open Access•G Panagiaris, Sotiris K Manoli et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1994•Referências: 2

The scientific value of isolated human populations is important for the understanding of ethnic formation, or for micro-evolution. The population of Sarakatsani in HELLAS was nomadic up to 10–15 years ago. It may still be considered as nomadic since it migrates during winter and summer. We studied three Sarakatsanic groups, geographically isolated in Epirus, Central Macedonia and Peloponessos. Nine cephalometric variables were measured and subjec…
