How Talented Is A. in the First Book of Cicero’s Tusculan Disputations
This paper shows that in the first book of Tusculan Disputations, the character “A.” plays a key role in our evaluation of the disputation’s outcome. Cicero often challenged Epicureanism on the grounds of inconsistency. Cicero personifies the charge through his character Torquatus, who defends Epicureanism in De finibus 1–2.
