  • Optimal Bayesian chronological modeling for high resolution chronology for the Middle Jomon of Kanto region (Honshu Island, Japan) approaching a generational scale

Open Access•Y Kanezaki, Takayuki Omori et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2025

In recent years, the increasing accumulation of radiocarbon dating data in Jomon research has progressed, creating a foundation for more detailed chronological estimates of the Jomon period’s high-resolution typo-chronology. However, there remains a gap between relative chronologies based on typology and radiocarbon data. A key issue arises from discrepancies between the concept of keishiki (“type” in Japanese) as a time unit of relative chronolo…

  • Laser Ablation System With a Diode Laser for Ams 14 C Measurement of Organic Materials

Open Access•Fumina Minamitani, Takayuki Omori et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•Referências: 18

We constructed a laser ablation (LA) system using a diode laser for the accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS 14 C) measurement of organic materials. The system could extract adequate CO 2 to analyze small masses (0.1 mg C) at a resolution of 250 μm by a 5.5 W diode laser. The LA system was assessed using standard materials (IAEA-C1, IAEA-C2, IAEA-C3, IAEA-C6, and Ox II) and applied to natural tree ring samples. For the LA sampling of or…

  • Beppu Bay, Japan, as a candidate Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point for the Anthropocene series

    Open Access•Michinobu Kuwae, B Finney et al.•ARTICLE•The Anthropocene Review•2023•Citada por: 4•Referências: 29

For assessment of the potential of the Beppu Bay sediments as a Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) candidate for the Anthropocene, we have integrated datasets of 99 proxies. The datasets for the sequences date back 100 years for most proxy records and 1300 years for several records. The cumulative number of occurrences of the anthropogenic fingerprint reveal unprecedented increases above the base of the 1953 flood layer at 64.6 c…

  • Aleutian Low variability for the last 7500 years and its relation to the Westerly Jet

    Open Access•Kana Nagashima, J A Addison et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2022

The Aleutian Low (AL) is one of the major atmospheric systems that determines environmental conditions during winter in the North Pacific Ocean, with impacts that affect the climates of both Asia and North America from mid- to high latitudes. However, the multi-centennial and longer scale behavior of the AL during the Holocene is not fully understood. In this study, AL variability since 7.5 ka was examined by applying the principal component anal…

Open Access•Takashi Oshio, Hiromi Kimura et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Open Access•Seiji Kadowaki, Toru Tamura et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2021•Citada por: 11•Referências: 40

The Initial Upper Paleolithic (IUP) is a key chrono-cultural concept in our understanding of the cultural and population dynamics at the transition from the Middle Paleolithic to Upper Paleolithic period. This paper presents technological and chronological analyses of lithic assemblages from a rockshelter site at Tor Fawaz in the Jebel Qalkha area, southern Jordan, to provide accurate dating and detailed recognition of the IUP variability in the …

  • Emergence and Development of Pottery in the Andean Early Formative Period

    Open Access•Yuko Kanezaki, Takayuki Omori et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2021•Citada por: 4•Referências: 14

This article presents a high-resolution chronology of Wairajirca pottery in the Huánuco basin, which has been identified as a frontier region between the Andean highlands and the Amazonian rain forests: its pottery is known for having mixed features from both areas. However, the lack of fine-grained pottery and radiocarbon datasets has handicapped comparative studies' attempts to track in detail its early development process. Our new high-resolut…

    Open Access•Minoru Yoneda, Takayuki Omori et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•2017•Referências: 16

Bone collagen was extracted from a series of Jomon skeletons from Iwashita Cave in Sasebo City, Nagasaki, Japan, which were excavated in 1964-1966 seasons. The radiocarbon dates on 5 skeletons from Layer V showed calibrated dates between 9000 and 10000 cal B.P. corresponding to the Initial (Earliest) Jomon period

  • From cradle to grave

The life history of a female individual skeleton (ST61) from the Edo period (AD 1603–1868) was investigated by using multi-tissue and multi-isotope analyses. Her gravestone and historical documents revealed that ST61 was a grandmother of a chief retainer of the Akashi clan who died in 1732 aged 77 years. Radiocarbon and sulfur stable isotope analyses indicated that the contribution of marine foods to the ST61 diet was relatively low (17.2% protei…

  • Variability in Early Ahmarian lithic technology and its implications for the model of a Levantine origin of the Protoaurignacian

Open Access•Seiji Kadowaki, Takayuki Omori et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2015•Citada por: 44•Referências: 62

This paper re-examines lithic technological variability of the Early Ahmarian, one of the early Upper Palaeolithic cultural entities in the Levant, which has often been regarded as a precursor of the Protoaurignacian (the early Upper Palaeolithic in Europe) in arguments for the occurrence of a cultural spread in association with the dispersal of Homo sapiens from the Levant to Europe. Using quantitative data on several lithic techno-typological a…

  • Assessing the Chronology and Rewrapping of Funerary Bundles at the Prehispanic Religious Center of Pachacamac, Peru

Over 30 funerary bundles were excavated in 2005 from a large chamber tomb at the prehispanic religious center of Pachacamac on the central coast of Peru. The largest and most elaborate bundle was found in the innermost part of the tomb, tightly surrounded by other bundles. We hypothesized that this bundle contained the deceased leader of a social group whose members collectively cared for their ancestor's bundle (for example, by rewrapping it) an…

  • An investigation of social factors related to online mentalizing in a human‐robot competitive game

Open Access•Hideyuki Takahashi, Chinatsu Saito et al.•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•2013

“Mentalizing” is the ability to attribute mental states to other agents. The lack of online mentalizing, which is required in actual social contexts, may cause serious social disorders such as autism. However, the mechanism of online mentalizing is still unclear. In this study, we found that behavioral entropy (which indicates the randomness of decision making) was an efficient behavioral index for online mentalizing in a human‐human competitive …

A key issue arises from discrepancies between the concept of keishiki (“type” in Japanese) as a time unit of relative chronolo…
