Beginning with the moment when he heard the call of the son he hopes to adopt without ever having actually seen, met, or heard him, the author traces the journey of the adoption process. Yet, research also finds that in the face of these identity-disconfirming remarks, parents manage to produce identity-affirming responses. When asked by his mother what to do about her dying father, the author finds himself in an aporia. Utilizing a broad range of rhetorical and ethical touch-stones, the author uses autoethnography to explore the phenomenon of communication ethics as it occurs in everyday experience.
