Une histoire d’entre-deux
Selling the Belgian School
This article analyzes the business operations of the Belgian Gallery, a commercial art gallery established in New York City in 1852 by painter Ferdinand De Braekeleer the Younger. Aided by the Belgian government, De Braekeleer set up a luxurious exhibition space, built a client base of some of the the first American collectors with a taste for contemporary European art, devised new strategies for publicity and distribution, and succeeded in marke…
Donald Westlake’s Ordo
Noir is a genre label with a long and complex history. The success of certain European home-grown forms of the genre (the French polar, the Scandinavian noir, etc.) invite us to reflect on the range but also the limits of the label in today’s European culture. The seemingly paradoxical example of Donald Westlake’s Ordo , an American noir novel that is perhaps neither ‘truly American’ nor ‘noir’ (and perhaps not even a ‘novel’) will serve here as …
From Euro-noir to Europe
This introduction briefly deals with the major orientations of this European Review Focus on ‘European crime fiction’. It first specifies what is meant by ‘Europe’ and which type of questions can be asked of crime fiction in view of a better understanding of Europe’s multiple and changing identities. It then presents the various contributions by linking them with the three fundamental questions of (1) circulation of crime fiction, (2) expansion o…
Stories
Stories are perceived as central to modern life. Not only in narrative entertainment media, such as television, cinema, theater, but also in social media. Telling/having "a story" is widely deemed essential, in business as well as in social life. Does this mark an intensification of what has always been part of human cultures; or has the realm of "story" expanded to dominate twenty-first century discourse? Addressing stories is an obvious priorit…
The General Exhibition of Pictures of 1851
This article examines a little-known but important moment in the history of the London art market and exhibition scene, namely, the organization of the General Exhibition of Pictures by the Living Artists of the Schools of All Countries, which was set up in London by Ossian Verdeau and Henry Mogford in 1851, concurrently with the Great Exhibition. It argues that the General Exhibition was not only the first universal art exhibition, but also cons…
An Example of “False Friends”
This article deals with the analogies and differences between the notion of genre in literature and the notion of genre in cinema. Despite the apparent similarities between genre concepts in both domains, it appears that the notion of genre has a very different status in literature and in cinema, not only because not all genres are represented in both media, but also because of the fact that the debate on “ genre fiction” versus “ genreless ficti…
The Role of Creative Arts in European Universities
The role of creative arts for tertiary education has been recognized for many years. Yet it is not clear to what extent the institutes of higher education take the required measures to facilitate the access to cultural activities for students. In the current study we examine this issue by means of a survey. An electronic questionnaire was filled out by 26 European universities, examining their state of affairs in the field of creative arts. The r…

Jan Dirk baetenS, Gemaakt in België.
Vanguard Economics, Rearguard Art
Ever since Harrison and Cynthia White introduced the notion of the ‘dealer–critic system’ in their 1965 landmark study Canvases and Careers: Institutional Change in the French Painting World, the concept has become a key element and a terminological touchstone in research on the nineteenth-century art market1. In short, the Whites argued that, in the second half of the nineteenth century, French art dealers and critics associated with the avant-g…

The Return of the Narrative In contemporary theory, the study of the image-as-narrative is no longer restricted to the domain of moving images (as analyzed in film studies, media studies, or communication studies). There has been recently a global rediscovery of the narrativity of the fixed image (although sometimes in a …
