Evidence of horse riding in domestic horses during the Bronze Age in Iberia
The adoption of horse for transport purposes profoundly reshaped mobility, exchange, and socio-economic organization, yet identifying early ridden and/or transport horses in Iberian archaeological contexts remains challenging due to the poor preservation of tack and other perishable equipment. Here we present an exceptional equine cranial specimen of 17 to 20 years of age at death from the Late Bronze Age site of Castillo Reyes (Pinto, Madrid, ce…
Herd management and animal catchment areas at the taula enclosure of Binissafullet site (Menorca, Spain)
This study presents the first isotopic analysis of livestock from a taula sanctuary dating from the Second Iron Age (c. 550-123 BCE) in Menorca (Spain). These emblematic structures contain the remains of animals, evidence of wine consumption, and other artefacts. Consequently, these structures are interpreted as sanctuaries or places where social cohesion was reinforced. The archaeological record reveals a blend of local and extra-insular element…
Last population of cave lion (Panthera (Leo) spelaea) in the extreme south-west of Europe
The revision of the fauna of Carigüela (Píñar, Granada) has yielded the remains of a cave lion hitherto unknown at this site. The comparative morphometric study of the distal humerus fragment has led to its attribution to Panthera spelaea Goldfuss. From two samples of the bone and using the U/Th technique, an absolute dating of 145–148 ka (MIS 6) has been established. The geographical location of the site makes the cave lion of Carigüela, togethe…
Bioavailable 87 Sr/ 86 Sr variability and Bronze and Iron Ages caprine mobility on the Balearic Islands (Spain)
This paper presents the most extensive 87Sr/86Sr datasets from Late Prehistory contexts in addition to bioavailable 87Sr/86Sr values for baseline characterization on the Balearic Islands. A total of 149 caprine dental enamel samples from Mallorca, Menorca, and Formentera islands (Spain), and 35 environmental baseline samples covering the main geologies of these islands are presented here. In addition, a combination of strontium and oxygen sequent…
Camelids in the south of the Iberian Peninsula in Roman and medieval times. Osteological evidence from the city of Cordoba (Spain)
This paper presents the results obtained concerning the possible presence of camelids in the city of Cordoba (Spain) in Roman and medieval times, after the review of all the faunal assemblages corresponding to these historical periods deposited in the Provincial Archaeological Museum of the city. This research has allowed the recovery and contextualization of nine dromedary bone remains corresponding to nine individuals, four of which have been d…
Into the circle. Animal and human deposits in a new Upper Guadalquivir site from the beginning of the 3rd millennium Cal BC (Grañena Baja, Jaén)
In 2014 due to the projected layout of the Madrid - Jaén high-speed railway line, a preventive archaeological intervention was carried out on a hill near the Guadalbullón riverbed within the farmland of Grañena Baja (Jaén). During the work, a multi-sequential Late Prehistory occupation, starting from the mid-S∗ millennium and reaching the end of the 3rd millennium, was documented. The phase corresponding to the last quarter of the 4th and the beg…
Tracing Mobility Patterns of Buried Species of the Late Iron Age Funerary Staggered Turriform of Son Ferrer (Calvià, Spain)
This is the first mobility 87 Sr/ 86 Sr analysis in human remains made on the Balearic Islands. Eight human individuals buried at the same Late Iron Age funerary chamber of Son Ferrer site (Calvià, Mallorca) have been sampled for strontium and oxygen isotopic analysis ( 87 Sr/ 86 Sr and δ 18 O). The study includes strontium and oxygen isotopic analysis of domestic mammals buried in the same Funerary Area (FA1) together with present-day vegetation…
Sex differences in diet and life conditions in a rural Medieval Islamic population from Spain (La Torrecilla, Granada)
OBJECTIVES: Gender differentiation can influence the diet, physical activity, and health of human populations. Multifaceted approaches are therefore necessary when exploring the biological consequences of gender-related social norms in the past. Here, we explore the links between diet, physiological stress, physical activity, and gender differentiation in the Medieval Islamic population of La Torrecilla (Granada, Spain, 13th-15th century AD), by …

Para proceder a su discusión se ha realizado previamente su contextualización cronológica a partir de una serie de dataciones radiocarbónicas y la revisión de la cronología relativa de los sepulcros. Las dataciones muestran el uso de la necrópolis megalítica durante todo el period…
Funerary reuse of a Roman amphitheatre
The economic and political disruption following the collapse of the Roman Empire is an important moment for the cultural and biological history of Western Europe. One of the trends associated this socioeconomic change is the reuse of Roman public monuments for different purposes including funerary ones. The cultural meaning of this practice, occasionally described throughout Europe, is however still unclear. Here, we present a study of a group of…

Assembling the Dead, Gathering the Living
The great site of Valencina de la Concepción, near Seville in the lower Guadalquivir valley of southwest Spain, is presented in the context of debate about the nature of Copper Age society in southern Iberia as a whole. Many aspects of the layout, use, character and development of Valencina remain unclear, just as there are major unresolved questions about the kind of society represented there and in southern Iberia, from the late fourth to the l…
New speleothem data from Molinos and Ejulve caves reveal Holocene hydrological variability in northeast Iberia
New speleothem records from northeastern Iberian caves provide data to explore the climatic patterns during the Holocene. We present δ 13 C and Mg/Ca from three speleothems from two different caves located in the Iberian Range allowing replication of the climatic signal for several millennia. Through the integration of those stalagmites covering since the Holocene onset to 2 ka, the early Holocene (11.7–8.5 ka) appears as the wettest interval. A …

An environmental snapshot of the Bølling interstadial in Southern Iberia
The Bølling–Allerød interstadial is the closest warm time period to the Holocene. The study of the climate variability during this most recent warm scenario provides a natural record of potential environmental changes related with global temperature variations. Little is known about this interstadial in the Southern Iberian Peninsula. Therefore, the exceptional climatic record of the Otiñar paleo-lake (ca. 14.5–14.0 cal ka BP), provides environme…
Isotope and trace element evolution of the naica aquifer (Chihuahua, Mexico) over the past 60,000 yr revealed by speleothems
The “espada” speleothems of Cueva de las Espadas (Naica Mine, Chihuahua, Mexico) comprise a high-purity selenite core overlain by successive deposits of calcite, gypsum and aragonite. Gypsum precipitated under water from a hydrothermal solution (~ 58°C) when the water table was above the cave level ca. 57 ka, during the last glaciation, and some intervals during deglaciation and the Holocene. Aragonite was deposited at lower temperatures (~ 26°C)…
Vegetation, fire, climate and human disturbance history in the southwestern Mediterranean area during the late Holocene
Detailed pollen, charcoal, isotope and magnetic susceptibility data from an alpine lake sediment core from Sierra Nevada, southern Spain record changes in vegetation, fire history and lake sedimentation since ca. 4100 cal yr BP. The proxies studied record an arid period from ca. 3800 to 3100 cal yr BP characterized by more xerophytic vegetation and lower lake levels. A humid period is recorded between ca. 3100 and 1850 cal yr BP, which occurred i…

Palaeoclimatic Identification Based on an Isotope Study of Travertine From the Copper Age Site at Los Millares, South‐eastern Spain
Remains of an aqueduct from the Copper Age settlement of Los Millares have been studied. The isotope results (—7‰ 18 O — 5.3‰) show that the aqueduct was used to transport fresh water at room temperature. The results are inconsistent with the aqueduct being used for hot water transport or as a container for water exposed to evaporation processes. Both isotopic and mineralogical results were useful in identifying the origin and use of building mat…

The Iberian–Roman Humid Period (2600–1600 cal yr BP) in the Zoñar Lake varve record (Andalucía, southern Spain)
The Iberian–Roman Humid Period (IRHP, 2600–1600 cal yr BP), is the most humid phase of the last 4000 yr in southern Spain as recorded in the sedimentary sequence of Zoñar Lake (37°29′00′′N, 4°41′22′′ W, 300 m a.s.l.). A varve chronology supported by several AMS 14 C dates allows study of the lake evolution at annual scale in response to human impact and climate changes. There are four climate phases within this period: i) gradual transition (2600…
Pleistocene–Holocene environmental change in the Canary Archipelago as inferred from the stable isotope composition of land snail shells
The isotopic composition of land snail shells was analyzed to investigate environmental changes in the eastern Canary Islands (28–29°N) over the last ~ 50 ka. Shell δ 13 C values range from −8.9‰ to 3.8‰. At various times during the glacial interval (~ 15 to ~ 50 ka), moving average shell δ 13 C values were 3‰ higher than today, suggesting a larger proportion of C 4 plants at those periods. Shell δ 18 O values range from −1.9‰ to 4.5‰, with movin…
Late-glacial to Holocene transition in northern Spain deduced from land-snail shelly accumulations
Shells of the helicid Cepaea nemoralis were studied using taphonomic, isotopic and morphometric measurements to estimate late glacial–Holocene (~ 12.1–6.3 cal ka BP) environmental conditions in northern Spain. Higher taphonomic alteration among Holocene shells suggests lower sedimentation rates or higher shell-destruction rates than during glacial conditions. Shells preserved the aragonitic composition despite differing degree of skeleton damage.…
