Christian Gnostics and Greek Philosophy in the Second Century
Apostles' Creed
The received text (T) of the Apostles' Creed which is now used in Christian churches around the globe is possibly first attested in the ordo Romanus antiquus , that is, not before the close of the eighth century (Westra 2002: 22–3).
Nicaea, Council of
With the council of Nicaea, the emperor Constantine forged a new tool of church governance in order to promote unity, concord, and peace in matters of Christian doctrine and church discipline in the Roman Empire.
Arius and Arianism
Arius was born into a Libyan family some time between 260 and 280 ce . Nothing more is known about his family, but it was in Libya that his theological views were to enjoy considerable support even after they had been condemned.
Nicene Creed
At the council of Nicaea ( see Nicaea, Council of), the doctrinal debates among the bishops were concluded on June 19, 325 ce with the promulgation of a creedal formula which came to be called the Nicene Creed (N).
Creeds, Christian
After 300 ce creeds assumed a growing role for the self‐definition of Christianity as a religious tradition. Like the lists enumerating the books of the Christian Bible, or the growing body of disciplinary canons generated by various councils, they formed part of a general trend toward a more explicit and more precise formulation of Christian norms in Late Antiquity.
Christianity as Philosophy
The article explores the profile, context and consequences of Christianity's self definition as a philosophy in the ancient world. It proposes a distinction between, on the one hand, the practice of teaching philosophy in small Christian schools, and, on the other hand, an intellectual discourse that proclaimed Christianity as the true and superior philosophy. It is argued that Christianity's self definition as a philosophy should not be viewed a…
Arius Reconsidered (Part 2)
Arius Reconsidered (Part 1)
Few heretics in the long history of Christianity have achieved the notoriety of Arius, the presbyter who lived and worked in Alexandria at the beginning of the fourth century. The little we know about his life and theological ideas has been transmitted by his opponents. If we try to recapture the historical Arius, the Arius behind the heresiological images, we have to confront – implicitly and explicitly – the constructions and reconstructions of…
Valentinian Variations on Lk 12,8-9/Mt 10,32
Clement of Alexandria has preserved a fragment of Herakleon, disciple of Valentinus, which comments on Lk 12,8-9 (11) par. The article interprets Herakleon's fragment as a piece of subtle second century Gospel exegesis, considers it in the context of the early Christian exegesis of Lk 12,8-9 par. and compares it with another Valentinian exegesis of the same verse which is related by Tertullian. Some conjectures as to the form of Herakleon's comme…
Some Observations on Karl-Heinz Schwarte's 'Diokletian's Christengesetz
