The demonstration of human antiquity
The authors disentangle the fascinating tale of the investigations in Kent's Cavern, iconic site for the acceptance of early man. The drawings they have discovered in the archives of the Geological Society are the only ones known from the earliest excavations and they are published here for the first time. As this paper shows, it takes intellectual courage to be an archaeologist. Whatever the enormity of his challenge to contemporary religion, I …
Marine diets in the European late Upper Paleolithic
Isotope evidence for the intensive use of marine foods by Late Upper Palaeolithic humans
Palaeolithic radiocarbon chronology
"The Gravettian burial known as the Prince ("Il Principe)
The famous upper Palaeolithic (Gravettian) burial with shell ornaments known as "Il Principe" was discovered in Italy sixty years ago. Here the authors present recent scientific research on his skeleton, leading to new assessments of the date of the burial and indications of diet
ESR and AMS-based 14C Dating of Mousterian Levels at Mujina Pećina, Dalmatia, Croatia
Problems of dating human bones from the Iron Gates
It is widely recognized that when marine resources form a significant proportion of the human diet, this results in radiocarbon ages for human remains that are significantly older than the contemporary atmosphere. While there has been widespread assessment of marine14C reservoir ages, there has been little study of the freshwater equivalent. However, recent analyses of human bone from archaeological sites in the Danube Valley have confirmed the e…

A Freshwater Diet-Derived 14 C Reservoir Effect at the Stone Age Sites in the Iron Gates Gorge
Human bones from single inhumation burials and artifacts made from terrestrial mammal (ungulate) bone found in direct association with the skeletons were obtained from the Stone Age site of Schela Cladovei situated just below the Iron Gates Gorge of the River Danube. The results of stable isotope analyses of the human bone collagen are consistent with a heavy dependence on aquatic protein while radiocarbon dating of the samples reveals an offset …

Neanderthal lifecycles
Neanderthal lives were not easy, and, given the levels of physical exertion they seem to have experienced habitually, bringing them often into contact with physical trauma, it would not be surprising if such phenomena played a major role in the way in which Neanderthals perceived the world. This is the underlying theme of this paper, which is organized into two parts. After presenting data on Neanderthal ontogeny and lifecycles, an attempt is mad…
An Aurignacian point from Uphill Quarry (Somerset) and the earliest settlement of Britain by Homo sapiens sapiens
A rare and important AMS sample provides an Aurignacian date for Britain. The artefact and its implications are discussed
Direct AMS Radiocarbon dates for the Sungir mid Upper Palaeolithic burials
The site of Sungir (alternatively Sounghir) lies east of the town of Vladimir, about 200 km northeast of Moscow. It is a large mid Upper Palaeolithic ('Eastern Gravettian' sensu lato) cultural accumulation on the left bank of the Kliazma river, of which some 1500 sq. m was excavated in several seasons between 1957 and 1964 (Bader 1965; 1967; 1978; 1998).The single burial (Grave 1/Sungir 1) was excavated in 1964. It is that ofan adult male in exte…
Disappearing from the World
This paper is concerned with the statistical precision of radiocarbon dating at the earlier range of its efficacy – the period into which falls the extinction of the Neanderthals. The many potential problems affecting accuracy of this technique are discussed as a caveat as to what one might expect of future research and development in this field. The main aim of the paper, however, is to examine exactly what our chronological precision is in the …

Gibraltar Neanderthals and results of recent excavations in Gorham's, Vanguard and Ibex Caves
In December 1998, we presented a Special section on great finds and publications of 1848. The discovery of the Gibraltar skull was in that famous year. Now, 150 years later new excavations and a recent conference have once again focused interest on this, the first place where Neanderthal remains were found

Shelter CaveThis human metacarpal was one of a collection of 34 human bones, all derived from a single adult skeleton, recovered in 1995 and 1996 from a stratified cave earth deposit in Shelter Cave-part of the Kitley Caves complex at Western Torrs Quarry, Yealmpton, Devon (NGR SX 57515123).The same stratigraphic layer produced undiagnostic flint flakes and a fragment of prehistoric pottery

Methodological Issues in the 14 C Dating of Rock Paintings
Chemical and isotopic analyses have been made of pigment samples from two separate rock art sites in Argentina. The purpose of the study has been to establish the feasibility of extracting carbonaceous material from the samples which will permit reliable radiocarbon dates for the time of painting. The two sites, Catamarca and Rio Negro, present quite different problems. Most of the paper is concerned with Catamarca, and here we have shown that th…
Radiocarbon Dates From the Oxford Ams System
This twenty-third list of accelerator dates consists mainly of material dated since the beginning of 1994.but includes a number of measurements made earlier in the dating programme. The dates have been achieved by the methods described in Law and Hedges (1989), Hedges et uI.(1989; 1992).Determinations with OxA numbers greater than 2095 were measured on the CO, gas ion-source (Bronk and Hedges 1989) rather than on the previous iron-graphite system.…

High resolution Neanderthals? Interpreting middle palaeolithic intrasite spatial data
Palaeolithic archaeologists have for some time been concerned with high resolution data, which is usually taken to mean intra‐site spatial patterning. This paper examines cases of such high resolution for the Middle Palaeolithic, and assesses exactly what such 'flagship' sites reveal about Neanderthal behaviour. Although such cases are rare, and most Middle Palaeolithic sites are just as informative albeit of lower resolution, an attempt is made …
