Estimation of Groundwater Residence Time Using Radiocarbon and Stable Isotope Ratio in Dissolved Inorganic Carbon and Soil CO 2
Estimation of residence time of groundwater, particularly in regions with inadequate surface waters are very important for formulating sustainable groundwater management policies. We developed a technique for extracting dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) quantitatively from water for measuring its 14 C contents and presented the analytical details here. We also measured stable carbon isotope ratio (δ 13 C) in soil CO 2 and groundwater DIC to correc…
New evidence of early Iron Age to Medieval settlements from the southern fringe of Thar Desert (western Great Rann of Kachchh), India
High-resolution mid-Holocene Indian Summer Monsoon recorded in a stalagmite from the Kotumsar Cave, Central India
Abrupt climate change at ~2800 yr BP evidenced by a stalagmite record from peninsular India
This study presents an analysis of the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) rainfall variations for a 1460-year period (1720–3180, Before Present BP: 1950 AD), based on a long record of stable isotopic variations (δ 18 O) with high temporal resolution (~annual) obtained from a U-Th dated stalagmite from the Kadapa cave in peninsular India. This stalagmite proxy record captures variations associated with wet and dry monsoons on decadal to centennial time-s…
Late-Holocene climate in the Lower Narmada valley, Gujarat, western India, inferred using sedimentary carbon and oxygen isotope ratios
We report the late-Holocene climate and vegetation of the Lower Narmada valley, Gujarat, western India as inferred from the stable carbon and oxygen isotopic composition (δ 13 C and δ 18 O) of sedimentary carbonates and the associated organic carbon. The alluvial plain from the surface to a depth of ~2 m consists of late-Holocene sediments, deposited during last ~3 kyr, probably by large historic and paleofloods. δ 13 C of both carbonates and org…
Radiocarbon and Stable Carbon Isotopes in Two Soil Profiles from Northeast India
Two soil profiles from northeast India, one from Bakrihawar, an agricultural land, and the other from Chandipur, a virgin hilly area from Assam, are investigated to understand the organic carbon dynamics of the area. Due to frequent flooding, the Bakrihawar soil has accumulated a higher clay content than that of Chandipur. The carbon content is less than 1% by weight in both the sites. The higher clay content is responsible for relatively more so…
Paleoclimate and paleovegetation of Lower Narmada Basin, Gujarat, Western India, inferred from stable carbon and oxygen isotopes
The Radiocarbon Chronology of Kopia, an Early Glass Manufacturing Centre in India
Right from the time of the Painted Grey Ware (PGW) culture, dating to c. 1200–600 bce , more than 210 archaeological sites in India have provided evidence of glass, but there has been no attempt to date the glass‐yielding layers by radiometric techniques. This has hampered the establishment of a chronology for the beginning and evolution of glass‐making in India. The site of Kopia was excavated by the first author for three seasons from 2004 to 2…
Monsoon reconstruction from radiocarbon dated tropical Indian speleothems
The potential of tropical speleothems as a climate proxy has been investigated. Amplitudes of 18 0 and 8 13 C variations are found to be large and are likely to be primarily controlled by past rainfall. Contribution from past temperature variations seems to be relatively small. The amount effect in rainfall has been observed and quantified by analysing rainwater samples collected during a monsoon season. A tentative chronology to these speleothem…
Past monsoon rainfall variations in peninsular India recorded in a 331-year-old speleothem
An actively growing stalagmite collected from a cave located in the hills of the Western Ghats in the Uttar Kannada District of Karnataka, India, has been studied for stable isotope ratios of oxygen and carbon, width of growth layers and grey-level changes. Distinct carbonate layers, alternate coarse and compact, are seen in cross-section. Each couplet of compact and coarse layer is found to represent a single year. A total of 331 such couplets h…
A Comparative Study of Monsoonal and Non-Monsoonal Himalayan Lakes, India
Sedimentological, mineral magnetic and carbon isotopic studies on cores from Mansar Lake in the Jammu area provide paleomonsoonal history dating back to 580 bc. From ca. 580 bc to ad 300, the region experienced precipitation similar to the present, whereas from ad 300 to 1400, the monsoon was relatively subdued. A small excursion ca. ad 1100 suggests an effect of medieval warming. Studies in the Kumaon region did not provide a proper precipitatio…
Cist burials of the Kumaun Himalayas
In the Kumaun region of Uttar Pradesh, India, on the southern slopes of the Himalaya are cist burials, as well as megalithic monuments. Radiocarbon dates from the cists now hint at their going back to the 3rd millennium BC, and linguistic affinities would associate them with early Indo-European migrations into the western and central Himalaya regions
Lake Sediments from the Kashmir Himalayas
We have measured 14 C, 210 Pb and 137 Cs profiles in two representative cores from Manasbal Lake, Kashmir, India. The sedimentation rate derived from 210 Pb and 137 Cs in the upper part of the core is in the range of 3.4 to 5.5 mm yr −1 . In contrast, 14 C ages show an inversion at depths >20 cm. These results are attributed to the erosion of the ubiquitous 10–20-m-thick loess mantle, based on the similarity of 14 C ages of the inversion layer in…
Physical Research Laboratory Radiocarbon Date List VI
We present here dates for archaeological and geological samples. The dates are based on τ 1/2 = 5568 years, using 1950 as the base year. The modern standard was 95% of activity of NBS oxalic acid. Samples were pretreated, prepared by methane synthesis and counted in a proportional counter. The detailed procedure has been described earlier (Agrawal, Gupta & Kusumgar 1971). We reported minor changes in previous date lists. Quoted errors are based o…
