What They Never Told You About the Coronado Expedition
The Coronado expedition is usually portrayed by historians and popularizers alike as a small army of Spanish knights in clanking armor dispatched by the king of Spain to look for gold. Thorough examination of the sixteenth-century documentary sources reveals that, instead, the expedition was very large and was not an army in any modern sense; its membership was not entirely or even predominantly Spanish; almost no one on the expedition possessed …
Migrations in Late Anasazi Prehistory
Through detailed analysis of artifactual and architectural materials, several researchers, notably Woodson (1999), have inferred that certain late pueblo ruins in southeast Arizona were built by immigrants from northern Arizona. It has gone nearly unnoticed that this conclusion is specifically verified by testimony of members of the Coronado Expedition, who passed through the region in 1540. The most detailed account—apparently based on informati…

Who Designed Coronado's Bridge Across the Pecos River
Spanish expeditionary forces of the sixteenth century in the Americas often relied on the skills of native “allies.” The possibility is investigated that a bridge, constructed in central New Mexico in 1541 during the Coronado expedition, was designed and built by Indians from central Mexico. Central Mexican bridge-building traditions of the protohistoric period are surveyed from documentary evidence. Characteristics such as short-span timber cons…
The Location of Coronado’s 1541 Bridge
In a 1962 Plains Anthropologist article, Albert Schroeder proposed a reconstruction of the 1541 Coronado expedition’s route into the Plains. His reconstruction included identification of the Rio de Cicuye as the Canadian River and siting the bridge by which the expedition crossed the river near modem Conchas Dam in extreme southeastern San Miguel County, New Mexico. The authors re-examine the sixteenth century documentary evidence in order to cri…
Development of Quaternary Stratigraphy in Northeastern United States and Adjacent Canada
Quaternary stratigraphy in the northeastern region has developed slowly because researchers have been few and because quartzose bedrock and extensive forest have inhibited field study. The earliest stratigraphic studies antedated 1850, but in most parts of the region the stratigraphic units still recognized today were identified in the present century. Ancient and modern sequences are generalized and are shown in charts.
Physical Evidence of Quaternary Climatic Change
Changes of climate have characterized parts, and at times apparently all, of Earth's surface. Changes that have occurred during the Quaternary period have special significance because, being comparatively recent, they are revealed by physical geologic features that are still at or near the surface, as yet little damaged by erosion. Although some of these features can be interpreted in terms that are broadly quantitative, most are still only quali…
Three Theories in Time
Pleistocene Climates in Low Latitudes
VER since the development of the theory in the 1830's, attention has centered mainly on and periglacial events in middle and high latitudes; the warmer parts of the earth have received less study. Possibly the widespread use of the term glacial age was in itself a factor in focusing attention chiefly on glaciation. Yet any explanation of the mechanism of a conspicuous change in world climates must try to explain what was happening in low latitude…

Introduction to Physical Geology
The Ice Age in the North American Arctic
Contains remarks on the glacial and interglacial ages together constituting the Pleistocene epoch inaccurately termed the "ice age." Then follows sections on evidence of glaciation; distribution and types of former glaciers; growth and dissappearance of glaciers; evidence of repeated glacial ages; glacial lakes; the postglacial sea and rise of the land; chronology and causes of glaciation; glaciation and life. Bibliography (over 30 items)
Discussion of the Geologic Material Dated by Radiocarbon, a Brief
Results from the geologic material are necessarily spotty, owing to the difficulties involved in obtaining samples that were both suitable for assay and derived from horizons whose stratigraphic position is known unequivocally. Many samples assayed were taken from horizons whose stratigraphic position is subject to doubt. Two general results have emerged from the assay of samples of primarily geologic significance: (1) The dates obtained fall rou…
Radiocarbon Dating
The Preceding discussions have considered the radiocarbon dates in relation to a number of archaeological, geological, and palynological problems. It remains to consider the endeavor as a whole, and to reach some conclusions concerning its present and future value and usefulness. Of primary importance is a consideration of what the dates mean. Basic to this is an understanding of the statistics involved. At the request of the Committee, Arnold, w…

Origin of the Former North American Ice Sheet
M j OST of us who have obtained our ideas of the Pleistocene geography of North America from elementary textbooks of geology, and even many who have gone more fully into the subject, have gained an exaggerated impression of the importance of the so-called and centers of radial outflow in the North American sheet. So exaggerated is this impression that the belief is still held that and glaciers accumulated in situi, or nearly so, as two distinct m…
