Class Notes on LGBTQ Lifespans
This essay addresses amnesia between and about queer generations in the contemporary US classroom. Drawing on theorists and historians such as Audre Lorde, George Chauncey, Gayle Rubin, and others, it argues that undergraduate students in the mid-2020s should be better introduced to queer and trans later lives through their syllabi. Queer Modernist Weapons of the Weak
This review of Jill Richards’s The Fury Archives: Female Citizenship, Human Rights, and the International Avant-Gardes situates the text within recent strains of queer modernist studies as well as longstanding theorizations of queer resistance. Closely reading one of Richards’s primary case studies, Claude Cahun, I argue that The Fury Archives patterns its thinking off of anthropologist James C. Eve Sedgwick's 'Other Materials'" refers to a graduate seminar that Sedgwick offered at the CUNY Graduate Center entitled "How to Do Things with Words and Other Materials." As its title suggests, her seminar advanced Sedgwick's enduring "FASCINATION" with "MAKING UNSPEAKING OBJECTS" of all sorts, which elsewhere included the body's organic and inorganic waste. "Hixploitation" Cinema, Regional Drive-ins, and the Cultural Emergence of a Queer New Right
This essay crafts a theory of queer conservatism by tracing understudied links between sexual nonnormativity and the rise of the New Right via the genre of hillbilly exploitation (hixploitation) cinema. I first rehearse the genre's formal and political markers as it was popularized at regional drive-ins across the US Midwest.
