A randomized community trial of a family planning outreach program was conducted in Rakai District, Uganda. Considerable change in the romantic and sexual behaviors of Asian young people may be occurring as traditionally Confucian societies modernize and increase outside contacts. This study explores the dimensions and context of this change in three sites at different stages in the process of modernization: Hanoi (early), Shanghai (intermediate), and Taipei (later stage). Gender and Ethnic Differences in the Co-occurrence of Adolescent Risk Behaviors
Our findings suggest that multi-factorial interventions which address the interrelationships between all of the behaviors are relevant regardless of gender or ethnicity. However, the ethnic and gender differences in the likelihood of specific patterns of interrelationships highlight the importance of considering the ethnic and gender composition of a population when developing future research and interventions
Partner Effects on a Woman's Intention to Conceive
CONTEXT: Current definitions of pregnancy intention that are useful at aggregate levels are weak at the individual level. This is especially true in social contexts where childbearing and pregnancy often occur within casual or transient relationships. METHODS: Extensive data on lifetime partnerships and sexual behaviors, including pregnancies and births, from 250 low-income women who had experienced a total of 839 pregnancies are used to explore …
Trends and Determinants of Contraceptive Use in Rakai District, Uganda, 1995–98
A prospective study conducted between 1995 and 1998 assessed trends in contraceptive use in rural Rakai District, Uganda. Over a period of 30 months, women's use of modern contraceptives increased significantly from 11 percent to 20 percent. Male condom use increased from 10 percent to 17 percent. Do Adolescents Want Babies? The Relationship Between Attitudes and Behavior
A prospective study of 313 Black adolescents who were followed for 2 years after presenting for a pregnancy test at an inner-city clinic in Baltimore suggested the need for greater attention to the concept of ambivalence in analyses of adolescent pregnancy. 80% of respondents were 15-17 years of age, 62% were public assistance recipients, and 76% were from female-headed households. Marital and Birth Expectations of Urban Adolescents
Data are presented that analyze 3,646 adolescents' responses to questions regarding their perceived ideal ages for marriage and first birth. The racial and gender differences that were obtained were then contrasted with vital statistics data on out-of-wedlock births to young women from the same geographical area. This comparison suggests that the adolescents' responses are reflective of the norms of the communities in which they live

Correlates of change in short-term economic dependency are explored in households of 307 urban black adolescents, approximately half of whom bring babies into the family. Evaluation of Pregnancy Prevention Programs in the School Context
This study looks at a primary pregnancy prevention program carried out in cooperation with the Baltimore City School System in an urban junior and senior high school. The program was run by the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Departments of Pediatrics and Gynecology/Obstetrics. It combined education counseling and medical services and operated both in the schools and in an adjacent clinic with staff shared between the sites. A team consisting of…

Data collected by self-administered questionnaires in 1981 in a senior and junior high school in Baltimore among 1153 respondents in grades 9-12 are the basis of a study of the ages of physical maturation and 1st intercourse in black teenage males and females. Respondents ranged in age from 13 to over 18 and averaged 16 the response rate was 98% and the quality of the answers was generally good. A positive association was found between age of men…
