  • Collaborating to create a research training program for underrepresented students

Open Access•Mackenzie J Gray, Dara Shifrer et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2026

Introduction In 2014, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) invested in the Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) initiative to enhance diversity in the biomedical research workforce. As one of ten grantees nationwide, the BUILD EXITO project at Portland State University established an institutionally and geographically diverse consortium including local community colleges, a research-intensive medical institution, and universiti…

  • Adolescent Math Anxiety

Open Access•Dara Shifrer, Hannah Sean Ellefritz et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Policy•2026

Math anxiety represents a substantial barrier to many students’ math learning. In this paper, we apply interdisciplinary perspectives to data on over 13,200 ninth graders and their math teachers from the High School Longitudinal Study. Results suggest that being perceived as dis/abled relates to heightened math anxiety regardless of adolescents’ gender, or race and ethnicity. Our intersectional approach reveals that adolescents’ expressions of ma…

  • Micropolitics in School‐Based Health Centers' Provision of Sexual Health Services

    Open Access•Dara Shifrer, Alyssa Nestler et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Forum•2025•Referências: 3

School-based health centers are ideally situated to provide sexual health services to adolescents but face a macropolitical climate with competing sets of interests. We apply an organizational theory to 2019-2021 interview data from 33 school-based health center (SBHC) coordinators and their educator partners in Oregon to reveal the micropolitics that coordinators engage in to provide sexual health services to adolescents. Interviewees described …

  • College Outcomes for Young Adults With and Without Learning Disabilities and ADHD

Dara Shifrer, Rachel Springer et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Higher Education•2025•Referências: 94

Inequalities by disability status in college outcomes contribute to inequalities throughout adulthood in multiple domains. As the share of students with learning disabilities and/or ADHD increases on college campuses, research is needed on how best to support these undergraduates, both through formal and informal means. We integrate the social and medical models of disability with data on nearly 17,000 young adults in the US, who typically finish…

  • School-based health centers and mental health stigma before and during the pandemic

Open Access•Dara Shifrer, Suzy Pappas et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Qualitative Research in…•2024

The mental health of children, and especially adolescents, has been a global public health priority for decades. School-based health centers (SBHCs) are health clinics established in close proximity to elementary and secondary schools for the purpose of increasing access to medical, and particularly mental health services, for children and adolescents. Yet, like other health clinics, SBHCs struggle to overcome structural and interpersonal stigma …

  • Shifting Tides

Open Access•Byeongdon Oh, Ned Tilbrook et al.•ARTICLE•Socius Sociological Research for…•2024•Citada por: 3•Referências: 33

Amid the proliferation of state-level bans on race-based affirmative action in higher education, the U.S. Supreme Court's decision on June 29, 2023, dismantled race-conscious college admission policies, intensifying concerns about the persistence and potential increase of racial inequality in higher education. The authors analyze four restricted-use national survey datasets to investigate racial disparities in college attendance outcomes from the…

  • Family Socioeconomic Status in Adolescence and Gender Identification in Emerging Adulthood

    Open Access•Lindsey Wilkinson, Dara Shifrer et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•2024•Referências: 58

This study contributes to research exploring social factors shaping gender identification. Informed by structural symbolic interactionism, social identity theory, and Levitt's psychosocial theory of gender, we explore how a key aspect of external social structure-adolescent family socioeconomic status-is associated with gender identification in emerging adulthood. We examine whether correlates of family socioeconomic status, including adolescent …

  • Delineating Differences in How US High Schools are Racialized

    Open Access•Dara Shifrer, Cj Appleton•ARTICLE•Youth & Society•2024•Citada por: 1•Referências: 67

Schools' overt or explicit practices are a dominant lens through which education researchers and policymakers attempt to understand how schools are racially inequitable. Yet, Lewis and Diamond argue that contemporary racial inequalities are largely sustained through implicit factors, like institutional practices and structural inequalities. Ray's framework on racialized organizations similarly outlines how our racialized sociopolitical structure …

  • Using National Data to Understand the Contextual Factors and Negative Experiences that Explain Racial Differences in the School Misbehavior of Ninth Grade Boys and Girls

Open Access•Cj Appleton, Dara Shifrer et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Early Adolescence•2023•Referências: 9

The literature linking adulthood criminality to cumulative disadvantage and early school misbehavior demonstrates that understanding the mechanisms underlying student behavior and the responses of teachers and administrators is crucial in comprehending racial/ethnic disparities in actual or perceived school misbehavior. We use data on 19,160 ninth graders from the nationally representative High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 to show that boys'…

  • Inequality among the Disadvantaged? Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Earnings among Young Men and Women without a College Education

Open Access•Byeongdon Oh, Daniel Mackin Freeman et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Race and Ethnicity•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 63

Despite the rapid expansion of higher education, many young adults still enter the labor market without a college education. However, little research has focused on racial/ethnic earnings disadvantages faced by non-college-educated youth. We analyze the restricted-use data from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 to examine racial/ethnic earnings disparities among non-college-educated young men and women in their early 20s as of 2016, acco…

  • Arts for Whose Sake? Arts Course-taking and Math Achievement in US High Schools

    Open Access•Daniel Mackin Freeman, D M A Freeman et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•2023•Referências: 74

Math achievement in U.S. high schools is a consistent predictor of educational attainment. While emphasis on raising math achievement continues, school-level interventions often come at the expense of other subjects. Arts courses are particularly at risk of being cut, especially in schools serving lower socioeconomic status youth. Evidence suggests, however, that arts coursework is beneficial to many educational outcomes. We use data on 20,590 ad…

  • The Relationship between Ninth Graders' Perceptions of Teacher Equity and Their Math Identity

    Open Access•Dara Shifrer, Kate Phillippo et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Education•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 23

Using data on ninth graders, math teachers, and schools from the nationally representative High School Longitudinal Study of 2009, we investigate the following questions: (1) How do ninth graders' perceptions of their math teachers as equitable relate to their math identity at the intersection of adolescents' race and gender? and (2) Do differences in the percentage of students at the school who share the adolescent's race moderate (i.e., differe…

  • Contextualizing Educational Disparities and the Evaluation of Teacher Quality

    Open Access•Dara Shifrer•ARTICLE•Social Problems•2022•Citada por: 2•Referências: 57

Value added scores, statistical estimates of teacher quality, are representative of neoliberal logic. The higher average scores of teachers of socially advantaged students raise concerns that scores are inaccurate and unfair, and propagate decontextualized neoliberal understandings of the nature of learning and teachers' work. This study uses longitudinal data from roughly 4,500 teachers in a large urban district between 2007-08 through 2012-13 t…

  • Problematizing Perceptions of STEM Potential

Open Access•Dara Shifrer, Daniel Mackin Freeman et al.•ARTICLE•Socius Sociological Research for…•2021•Citada por: 3•Referências: 60

The STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) potential of youth with cognitive disabilities is often dismissed through problematic perceptions of STEM ability as natural and of youth with cognitive disabilities as unable. National data on more than 15,000 adolescents from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 first suggest that, among youth with disabilities, youth with medicated attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD…

  • Educational Outcomes Of Gender-Diverse Youth

    Open Access•Lindsey Wilkinson, Dara Shifrer et al.•ARTICLE•Gender & Society•2021•Citada por: 5•Referências: 57

Despite the growing population of youth identifying with a transgender or nonbinary gender identity, research on gender-diverse individuals' educational outcomes is limited. This study takes advantage of the first nationally representative, population-based data set that includes measures of gender identity and educational outcomes: the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009. Using minority stress and structural symbolic interactionist frameworks…

  • The Contributions of Parental, Academic, School, and Peer Factors to Differences by Socioeconomic Status in Adolescents’ Locus of Control

    Open Access•Dara Shifrer•ARTICLE•Society and Mental Health•2019

An internal locus of control may be particularly valuable for youth with low socioeconomic status (SES), yet the mechanisms that externalize their control remain unclear. This study uses data on 16,450 U.S. eighth graders surveyed for the National Education Longitudinal Study in 1988 and 1990. Results indicate family income is more closely associated with adolescents’ locus of control than parents’ occupations and educational attainment and that …

  • Disability at the intersections

    Open Access•Dara Shifrer, Angela Frederick•ARTICLE•Sociology Compass•2019•Citada por: 13•Referências: 31

Complete and accurate understandings of stratification depend on more regular consideration of disability. To build sociologists' recognition of disability as a socially constructed axis of stratification, we first demonstrate the construction of the disability category through classic legitimating processes: moral attributions, biological attributions, separation, and dichotomization. Expanding understandings of basic processes of stratification…

  • Race and Disability

    Open Access•Angela Frederick, Dara Shifrer•ARTICLE•Sociology of Race and Ethnicity•2019•Citada por: 28•Referências: 66

Sociologists are using intersectional lenses to examine an increasingly wider range of processes and identities, yet the intersection of race and disability remains a particularly neglected area in sociology. Marking an important step toward filling this gap, the authors interrogate how race and disability have been deployed as analogy in both disability rights activism and in critical race discourse. The authors argue that the "minority model" f…

  • Clarifying the Social Roots of the Disproportionate Classification of Racial Minorities and Males with Learning Disabilities

    Dara Shifrer•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•2018•Citada por: 19•Referências: 76

The disproportionate placement of racial minorities and males into special education for learning disabilities (LDs) raises concerns that classifications occur inaccurately or inequitably. This study uses data from the Education Longitudinal Survey of 2002 to investigate the social etiology of LD classifications that persist into adolescence. Findings suggest the overclassification of racial minorities is largely consistent with (clinically relev…

Placement of some students into the courses needed only for high school graduation and others into those that prepare them for college constitutes academic stratification. This study uses data from the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 to investigate whether students labeled with learning disabilities complete fewer academic courses by the end of high school compared to their peers who are not labeled. Results indicate large disparities in com…

  • Stigma of a Label

    Open Access•Dara Shifrer•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•2013•Citada por: 24•Referências: 50

Poorer outcomes for youth labeled with learning disabilities (LDs) are often attributed to the student's own deficiencies or cumulative disadvantage; but the more troubling possibility is that special education placement limits rather than expands these students' opportunities. Labeling theory partially attributes the poorer outcomes of labeled persons to stigma related to labels. This study uses data on approximately 11,740 adolescents and their…

    Open Access•Amy G Langenkamp, Dara Shifrer•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescent Research•2017•Citada por: 6•Referências: 17

In an era of heightened educational expectations, it can be difficult to discern why would-be first-generation college-going adolescents are less likely to enroll in college than non-first generation adolescents. This article draws from cultural sociology to interpret differences in the way that adolescents socially construct the transition into college.
