Biological and behavioral predictors of relative energy intake after acute exercise
Short-term effects and long-term changes of Fuel-a digital sports nutrition intervention on REDs related symptoms in female athletes
Female endurance athletes are at high risk for developing Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs), resulting in symptoms such as menstrual dysfunction and gastrointestinal (GI) problems. The primary aim of this study was to investigate effects of the FUEL (Food and nUtrition for Endurance athletes-a Learning program) intervention consisting of weekly online lectures combined with individual athlete-centered nutrition counseling every other wee…
Spatial analysis of tobacco outlet density on secondhand smoke exposure and asthma health among children in Baltimore City
Increased tobacco outlet density is associated with higher levels of bedroom air nicotine and serum cotinine. Increasing levels of SHS exposure (air nicotine and serum cotinine) are associated with less controlled childhood asthma. In Baltimore City, the health of children with asthma is adversely impacted in neighbourhoods where tobacco outlets are concentrated. The implications of our findings can inform community-level interventions to address…
Risk of Low Energy Availability, Disordered Eating, Exercise Addiction, and Food Intolerances in Female Endurance Athletes
Relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S) is a complex syndrome describing health and performance consequences of low energy availability (LEA) and is common among female endurance athletes. Various underlying causes of LEA have been reported, including disordered eating behavior (DE), but studies investigating the association with exercise addiction and food intolerances are lacking. Therefore, the aim of this cross-sectional study was to inve…
Indoor Air Quality Prior to and Following School Building Renovation in a Mid-Atlantic School District
Children spend the majority of their time indoors, and a substantial portion of this time in the school environment. Air pollution has been shown to adversely impact lung development and has effects that extend beyond respiratory health. The goal of this study was to evaluate the indoor environment in public schools in the context of an ongoing urban renovation program to investigate the impact of school building renovation and replacement on ind…
The Lung Health Ambassador Program
Introduction: Educational campaigns have the potential to inform at risk populations about key issues relevant to lung health and to facilitate active engagement promoting healthy behaviors and risk prevention. We developed a community-based educational campaign called the Lung Health Ambassador Program (LHAP) with a goal of engaging youth and empowering them to be advocates for pulmonary health in their community. Objective: To evaluate the proc…
Differential relationship between physical activity and intake of added sugar and nutrient-dense foods
Effects of Heavy Exercise and Restricted Diet Regimes on Nitrogen Balance and Body Composition
In the past people led far more strenuous, active lives than industrialized, sedentary populations do today, and conditions could be far harsher, for instance during frigid glacial conditions. These factors carry significant implications for human energy requirements and metabolism. Endurance athletes undergoing strenuous physical regimes can serve as models for such demanding conditions. This chapter reviews the influences of strenuous activity …
Reductions in urinary collection frequency for assessment of reproductive hormones provide physiologically representative exposure and mean concentrations when compared with daily collection
OBJECTIVE: To determine if reducing the frequency of urinary sample collection from daily to 5, 3, or 2 days per week during a menstrual cycle or 28-day amenorrheic monitoring period provide accurate representations of the reproductive hormone metabolites estrone-1-glucuronide (E1G) and pregnanediol glucuronide (PdG) exposure and mean concentrations. METHODS: Exercising women presenting with eumenorrhea or exercise-associated menstrual disturbanc…
Human dietary δ 15 N intake
Dietary analysis using δ 15 N values of human remains such as bone and hair is usually based on general principles and limited data sets. Even for modern humans, the direct ascertainment of dietary δ 15 N is difficult and laborious, due to the complexity of metabolism and nitrogen fractionation, differing dietary habits and variation of δ 15 N values of food items. The objective of this study was to summarize contemporary regional experimental an…
