Monophonematic or Biphonematic Status of Prenasals in Ulund The manɟaku group is a linguistic group that so far includes 15 dialects: ucuur, uɟool, utufan, ubok, ubuj, ujang, uciban-ukan, usiis, uteer, useerar, ulëkës, ubo- mat, uñoob-utam, uyu and ulund. The ulund language of the manɟaku group is taken as a sample in this inquiry. Its speakers call each other the Balund. The latter are thought to be originated in Guinea Bissau, and their main ar…
Fiche technique EVA
Vogais Nasais Do Português Brasileiro
As vogais [ i), Î), u)]1 apresentaram abaixamento do véu comparativamente a suas contrapartes orais.
Clicks, stop bursts, vocoids and the timing of articulatory gestures in Kinyarwanda
This paper shows that differences in timing and coordination of articulatory gestures in Kinyarwanda’s complex consonants trigger the emergence of epiphenomenal clicks. Acoustic and aerodynamic data show that click bursts of weak intensity appear in sequences of front (bilabial or alveolar) and velar nasals. The possible consequences of this phenomenon for sound change are briefly discussed. The emergence of short vocoids due a different timing o…
The Experimental Phonology

The Phonetics and Phonology of Unreleased Stops in Karitiana
Karitiana, an endangered language from the Tupi stock, Arikem family, spoken in the state of Rondonia in Brazil, exhibits a number of interesting phenomena concerning stop consonants at the end of words. In particular, voiceless stops are always unreleased word-finally. This phenomenon has been observed as a occasional variant of stops in English (Laver 1994, Ladefoged & Maddieson 1996) and in a number of other languages such as Bamileke (Westerm…
Phonetic characteristics of an unexploded palatal implosive in Hendo
This paper describes the phonetic characteristics of an unexploded palatal implosive in Hendo, a Bantu language spoken in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This sound is an allophone of a palatal affricate implosive. Consideration of acoustic, aerodynamic and articulatory data obtained from various methods give a precise description of this sound
Double articulations in some Mangbutu-Efe languages
This paper examines double articulations in three African languages, Mamvu, Lese and Efe, all belonging to the Central Sudanic language family. The phonetic inventory of these languages exhibits some very interesting facts, among which the most striking are voiceless labial velar stops with double bursts, and a labial uvular stop which shows the combination of a voiceless and a voiced part in the same consonant. Acoustic and aerodynamic measureme…
Labiodental Flaps in Mangbetu
Labiodental flaps exist in several African languages, and were first described by Doke (1931) in a study of Shona. Westermann and Ward (1933: 76) quote data from Tucker, who notes labiodental flaps in Kreish, a Central Sudanic language of the Sara-Bongo-Baguirmi group. In the same group of languages, Thomas (1981: 262) claims to find them in Bongo-Gberi and in Binga-Kara. Thomas defines these sounds as "vibrantes labiodentales" (see also Caprile …
