Mỹky interlocutor exponence and the syntax of the speech act
Mỹky is an isolated polysynthetic language spoken in southern Amazonia, in the western area of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso (Monserrat 2010; Bardagil 2023). One of the morpheme slots on the right edge of the polysynthetic verb displays a morphological alternation, with one form corresponding to a speaker and addressee of the same category, and another form to interlocutors of different categories. I lay out a proposal to account for this al…
The decline of Jê ergativity
In this paper I discuss the diachrony of case marking alignment in J languages (Brazil).J languages conform a medium-sized family with a rich pattern of case marking: an accusative-ergative alignment split, which is a by-product of nominalization strategies, and a split-S pattern in the accusative portion of the case marking split. The one exception is Panar, a polysynthetic language where case marking is uniformly ergative. In this paper I lay out…
The loss of Jê nominal verbs in Panará
In Jê languages, verbs appear in a non-finite form that fulfills a double function: licensing marked TAME semantics in main clauses, and licensing embedded clauses. However, the Panará language lost its non-finite verbal form. This paper examines Panará verbs from both a synchronic and diachronic angle, and in a broader comparative approach with regards to the morphosyntactic behaviour of verbs in the other Jê languages. The main claim is that th…
Number morphology in Panará
In this paper I present a description of number in Panará, with singular, dual and plural, and discuss the mass-count properties of Panará nouns. I also describe an until now unattested instance of omnivorous dual in Panará, where one dual morpheme can map to one or more arguments
Watjuho Ja'a
O povo Manoki (também conhecidos como Irantxe) é uma nação indígena do vale do Juruena, no Mato Grosso. A língua própria dos Manoki é uma variedade da língua mỹky, uma língua isolada. O objetivo do presente artigo é apresentar a situação do povo Manoki, assim como discutir as estratégias sendo adotadas pelo povo Manoki para iniciar um processo a longo prazo de retomar a língua própria entre os membros jovens da comunidade, de forma paralela ao pr…
Realigning alignment
We analyse case marking in the Jê language family (Brazilian Amazonia) with the new completeness alignment typology proposed by Lindenbergh & Zwart (2017) . In contrast with classical alignment typology, the completeness typology first determines whether all grammatical functions participate in a grammatical process (e.g. case marking) and only then determines how these grammatical functions are aligned, adding nine incomplete alignment types to …
Tangled up in mood
The two primary goals of this article are to present data concerning the mood-based alignment split that can be observed in Panará pronominal clitics and to put forward a tentative formal analysis that can capture the motivations of such phenomena in the grammar. This paper aims to explore an approach to mood from a simple syntactic perspective, in which different sets of features active in the narrow syntax suffice to derive the case marking phe…
