Bidirectional Longitudinal Correlations Between Alcohol Use Frequency and Quantity, and Anxiety in Adults
OBJECTIVE: Alcohol use and anxiety both contribute significantly to the global burden of disease, and understanding their longitudinal relationships may clarify whether they exacerbate each another. However, previous research on the topic has yielded mixed results, potentially due to a lack of differentiation between alcohol use patterns. This study aimed to explore the bidirectional longitudinal correlations between alcohol use frequency and qua…
Climate change necessitates a concerted and coordinated response from the alcohol and other drugs sector
Climate change is increasingly affecting all areas of our lives, with direct and indirect impacts on people’s health, wellbeing, livelihoods and systems of support (Intergovernmental Panel on Clima
The alcohol licensing system in Northern Ireland
Background The alcohol licensing system in Northern Ireland (NI) stipulates that a new pub or off-licence can only open if an existing pub or off-licence closes and ‘surrenders’ its licence. In 2022, the NI Department for Communities commissioned a statutory, independent review of this system. This paper summarizes key findings, highlighting suboptimal outcomes and identifying lessons for future licensing design. Methods A mixed-method study, incl…
Identifying innovative approaches to the temporal availability of alcohol in Great Britain—a policy analysis
Background In Great Britain, local authorities responsible for alcohol premises licensing produce a statement of licensing policy setting out how they intend to exercise their statutory licensing functions including on trading hours. We aimed to describe and compare these policies on alcohol trading hours, including their interpretation and application of laws and guidance. Methods Policies were obtained from the websites of all 366 local licensin…

Quantitative controls on the number and/or location of alcohol retail outlets
Quantitative controls on the number and/or location of alcohol retail outlets are widely used across the USA and Canada but vary significantly in structure and stringency. While some jurisdictions impose multiple controls, others apply none. Understanding these policy approaches provides insight into regulatory frameworks but does not indicate enforcement levels or public health impact. Further research could examine how these measures are implem…
How are bars and nightclubs in Scotland using extensions in late-night alcohol trading hours? Venue observation study
Extensions in late-night alcohol trading hours granted in two Scottish cities were not used consistently by venues due to lack of demand by customers. The late-night sale of alcohol to intoxicated customers was routine. Our findings challenge the assumption that later trading hours benefit the night-time economy and highlight the likelihood of associated alcohol-related harms
An analysis of framing mechanisms used in alcohol industry submissions to an Australian national parliamentary inquiry
The aim of this study is to analyse alcohol industry submissions to an Australian national parliamentary inquiry to understand the industry arguments and their implications for alcohol policy-making, and to test, for the first time, the applicability of Campbell and colleagues’ typology of framing mechanisms to alcohol industry submissions. We undertook a directed content analysis to code policy positions and arguments made by industry actors in …
Public perceptions of harms and benefits of increasing alcohol venue trading hours
Background Late-night opening of alcohol venues is associated with increased intoxication, social disorder and burden on public services. From 2017, two Scottish cities—Aberdeen and Glasgow—extended venue trading hours, to 3am and 4am, respectively. This study aimed to explore (i) public perceptions of harms and benefits of later trading hours, and (ii) how related public health evidence is assessed and used by the public. Methods Eight groups of …
Risk versus pleasure
Background There have been significant declines in alcohol use for adolescents in high-income countries since the mid-2000s. Research suggests key factors are driving this, including: (1) negative attitudes to alcohol, (2) concern about health, and 3) increased focus on risk aversion. The aim of this article is to understand whether and how these factors change as light drinking adolescents age into early adulthood. Methods Qualitative interviews …
Gender Differences in Alcohol Research
Gender is a social and cultural construct that shapes human experience, and is one of the most significant social determinants of health [1]. Gendered drinking practices are an example of this. Research across different historical periods and cultural contexts has consistently shown that women are more likely to abstain from alcohol consumption [2, 3], while men generally consume more alcohol [3] and are more likely to engage in heavy episodic dr…

Alcohol’s contribution to climate change and other environmental degradation
Climate change is the single biggest health threat facing humanity. The production, distribution and consumption of many fast-moving consumer goods contribute substantially to climate change, principally through releasing greenhouse gas emissions. Here we consider just some of the ways that alcohol—already a key contributor to an array of health, social and economic burdens—exacerbates environmental harms and climate change. We explore current ev…
Substance use and the Sustainable Development Goals
Purpose: The United Nations has adopted a set of 17 interlocking Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2015–2030. This commentary discusses how alcohol and other drugs have been dealt with and discussed in the context of the Goals, and issues raised by the relationship and history of how alcohol and other drug use and problems relate to development.Material and methods: A cross-section of discussions of alcohol and drugs in the context of the …
Uncorking the ‘wine mum’
By juxtaposing women's stories with 'wine mum' stereotypes, and the broader feminisation of drinking, we highlight how women's drinking practices are influenced not only by static identities, but the complex interplay between gender, a myriad of fluid social categories, and day-to-day life. We suggest that attending to context and women's everyday experiences is crucial for generating a nuanced understanding of drinking beyond women's traditional…
Reducing alcohol harms whilst minimising impact on hospitality businesses
Alcohol policies that protect public health do not necessarily harm bars. • ‘Sweetspot’ policies are those which can improve public health without affecting hospitality businesses. • There is good evidence that increasing the price of shop-bought alcohol is a sweetspot policy. • Restricting remote/online alcohol sales is also a likely sweetspot policy. • Measures to shape or manage the night-time economy are less well supported by evidence. Durin…
Drinking alcohol at home feels different from drinking in public places
This paper shows how drinking in one's own home affords different affective experiences to drinking in public settings such as bars, pubs and restaurants. A thematic analysis of interviews with 40 Australians aged 30-65 identified three main variations in alcohol-associated feelings, sensations and urges. Alcohol was used at home to decelerate, but in contrast, people were enlivened when drinking in public venues. Drinking in public generated a s…
Strategies to support midlife women to reduce their alcohol consumption
Alcohol consumption is causally associated with long-term health-related consequences, such as cancer and cardiovascular disease, and short-term harms, such as accidents and injuries. Alcohol consumption has increased among midlife women (aged 40–65) over the last two decades in high-income countries. This study aimed to centre women’s voices by using co-design methodologies to investigate what women identify as strategies that could assist them …

Parents' management of alcohol in the context of discourses of 'competent' parenting
How parents manage potential tensions between normative discourses of 'competent parenting' and their desires to consume alcohol has received little attention. In this article, we explore the elements that encourage or constrain parents' drinking and investigate how parents consider and manage their alcohol use in the context of multiple social roles with sometimes conflicting demands and expectations around 'competent parenting'. Our analysis dr…
Fluorochrome labelling in roman period skeletons from dakhleh oasis, Egypt
A histological aging study of femoral midshafts in a late Roman period sample from the Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt, showed discrete fluorochrome labelling. The fluorochome is yellow‐green in colour and fluoresces at a wavelength of 525 nm. The labelling occurs at the mineralization fronts and is so distinct that several histomorphometric measurements were made. The percent labelled surface values ranged from 6.03% to 59.34%, and the mean distance betwee…

Assembling the socio-cultural and material elements of young adults’ drinking on a night out
Consuming alcohol in night-time entertainment (NTE) precincts is a common practice for young adults in urban environments. Public health research often emphasises the ‘harms’ associated with drinking in NTE precincts and views these as being a product of the widespread availability of alcohol. However, this obscures more complex accounts of the various elements at play in young adults’ drinking on a night out. Employing assemblage thinking and a …
