Four Santa Elena monuments from Balancan museum, Tabasco, Mexico
The relevance of the research topic is due to the fact that the corpus of hieroglyphic inscriptions of Santa Elena, located in the municipality of Balancan in the territory of the modern state of Tabasco, is not large, and most of the references to its rulers are taken from the texts of other monuments. The inscriptions analyzed in the study have not previously been fully introduced into scientific circulation. The aim of this study is to analyze…
An account of the kings of Kanu'l as recorded on the hieroglyphic stair of K'an II of Caracol
Many questions remain about the hieroglyphic stair dedicated in a.d. 642 by K'an II, the great king of Caracol. Constituent panels have been found at Caracol, Ucanal, Naranjo, and Xunantunich—archaeological sites spread between Guatemala and Belize. The most recently discovered Panels 3 and 4 at Xunantunich shed light on the tumultuous decades of the seventh century. Panel 4, which opened the hieroglyphic stair, makes a surprising statement from …

Ritual Seclusion of Princes in Classic Maya Texts
The paper is dedicated to a previously unrecognized Classic Maya ritual (3rd-10th centuries CE). Several examples have been located in hieroglyphic texts so far and two of them describe the ritual in some detail. Palenque texts tell us that the six-year-old prince and future king K'ihnich Kan B'ahlam II "went up to an enclosed place surrounded by wooden walls". He remained there for 537 days, "descended" in the company of "two youths (boys)" and …
A Possible [tze] Syllable and its Associates in Maya Writing
The decipherment of the Maya script is still far from completion and awaits the interpretation of a considerable number of logograms and syllabic signs. This paper is dedicated to the composite sign that has been previously considered a ligature of two syllabic signs, tzo and ko. The present analysis shows that these two graphic elements are never written separately and that the ko-like element differs from the other ko syllables attested in the …

The close collaboration between researchers of the Institute of Cross-cultural and Regional Studies, the Copenhagen University Library (KUB) of the Royal Danish Library, and members of the Rigsters 3D Scanning team in the private sector has led to highly productive interchange and applications of some of the most recent photogrammetric modelling, especially with applications to archaeology, cultural heritage and epigraphy. In this paper, we highl…
