Do recessions accelerate routine-biased technological change in Western Europe?
The decline of routine employment is a well-documented feature of high-income economies, commonly attributed to routine-biased technological change (RBTC). This article examines the impact of the Great Recession on RBTC and routine employment in Western Europe. Using a continuous difference-in-differences analysis that leverages variation in recession severity across industries, we establish a set of new findings. First, routine employment declin…
Global Value Chain Participation and the Labour Share
Participation in global value chains (GVCs) has been proposed as a central means for emerging economies to develop and technologically upgrade. However, the effects of GVCs on income distribution in the global South remain underexplored. This article presents an econometric analysis of the determinants of the labour share in seven emerging economies for the period 1995-2014. Drawing on industry-level data from global input-output tables, the auth…
The decline in the wage share
We investigate whether the downward trend in the wage share is driven by technological change or a decline in labour's bargaining power. We present an econometric analysis using industry-level data for 14 Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries for the 1970-2014 period and test whether the determinants of the wage share differ between manufacturing and service industries, between workers of different skill groups a…
Retracted
It is frequently asserted that financialization has contributed to the decline in the wage share. This article provides a theoretical clarification and a systematic empirical investigation. We identify four arguments for why financialization would affect the wage share: (a) a Political Economy approach focusing on the exit options of firms; (b) a mark-up pricing approach stressing the role of financial overhead costs for firms; (c) increased comp…
