  • Small Independent Merchants and Transnational Retail Encounters on Main Street

    Open Access•Alex M Mutebi, Alex Mutebi et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2008•Citada por: 1•Referências: 36

The aggressive expansion of retail transnational corporations is changing the face of much of emerging Asia's urban environment and prompting policy-makers to consider responses. Using cross-sectional survey data from 30 districts in Bangkok, this paper explores two issues: the impact of transnational, large-format retail on small, independent merchants; and, the ways in which the latter are attempting to cope with the stress associated with the …

  • Explaining the Failure of Thailand's Anti-corruption Regime

    Open Access•Alex M Mutebi, Alex Mutebi•ARTICLE•Development and Change•2008•Citada por: 13•Referências: 57

Despite the presence of strong anti-corruption policies, state and regulatory capture may persist and thrive in the highest echelons of government. This article explores such a case, that of Thailand under former Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra. The author argues that the primary explanation for this contradiction lies in Thailand's post-1997 anti-corruption framework. Because of the ascendancy of a business-politics nexus more powerful in blo…

  • Regulatory Responses to Large-format Transnational Retail in South-east Asian Cities

    Open Access•Alex M Mutebi, Alex Mutebi•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2007•Citada por: 6•Referências: 53

Aggressive internationalisation by transnational chains is changing the face of the urban environment in much of emerging Asia. In south-east Asia, the period following the Asian financial crisis of 1997 provided an opportunity for the penetration of these transnational chains, particularly in the large-format retail sector-a development that has since presented planners and policy-makers with some difficult choices. This article inventories the …

  • Thailand ́ S Independent Agencies Under Thaksin

    Alex M Mutebi, Alex Mutebi•ARTICLE•Southeast Asian affairs•2006

Present-day Thailand has a more stable and transparent political system than in the past, when frequent changes in government, often by military intervention, seemed to be the leitmotif of the Thai polity. The last coup in 1991, followed by events in May 1992, where security officers killed at least 50 unarmed civilians during street confrontations in Bangkok, shocked the Thai political system and stimulated a marked change in the kingdom's democ…

  • Thaksin Triumphant

Erik Martinez Kuhonta, Alex M Mutebi et al.•ARTICLE•Asian Affairs An American Review•2006•Citada por: 1

The 2005 elections were a watershed in Thailand's democracy. For the first time, one party, the Thai Rak Thai (TRT), achieved a landslide victory. This victory ensures that TRT can reign hegemonic over Parliament and govern without the need of coalition partners. The consequences for Thai democracy are significant. Above all, this victory legitimizes Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's disdain of the need for democratic consultation. To assess th…

  • Thailand in 2003

    Alex M Mutebi, Alex Mutebi•ARTICLE•Asian Survey•2004•Citada por: 4

This article surveys the key political and economic highlights of Thailand in 2003. With his party in full control of the political scene buoyed by a resurgent economy he helped to engineer, the prime minister continued to tower over almost all aspects of Thai life, changing the face of Thailand

  • Thailand in 2002

    Alex M Mutebi, Alex Mutebi•ARTICLE•Asian Survey•2003•Citada por: 4•Referências: 2

This article surveys the key political and economic highlights of Thailand in 2002. The party of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra consolidated its power by absorbing several opposition parties, thus cementing its unassailable hold on the House of Representatives. This, in turn, gave the party the ability to legislate virtually unopposed while guaranteeing both political stability and policy continuity for the rest of the prime minister's term. M…
