Forensic isoscapes based on intra-individual temporal variation of δ 18 O and 206 Pb/ 207 Pb in human teeth
Isotopic signatures used in the georeferencing of human remains are largely fixed by spatially distinct geologic and environmental processes. However, location-dependent temporal changes in these isotope ratios should also be considered when determining an individual's provenance and/or trajectory. Distributions of the relevant isotopes can be impacted by predictable external factors such as climate change, delocalisation of food and water source…
MC‐ICP‐MS analyses of tin isotopes in Roman‐era bronze coins reveal temporal and spatial variation
Tin's small mass fractionation and the lack of accepted reference standards have hindered Sn isotopy in archaeology and conservation science. Because of ore field variation and potential fractionation during ore reduction, attempts to determine artefacts’ ore sources have been limited. After norming the fractionations to NIST 3161a (Lot #070330), significant differences in Sn isotope mass fractionation in Judaean bronze ‘Biblical’ coins minted by…

Lead isotope analysis of intra-skeletal variation in a 19th century mental asylum cemetery
Living bone sequesters environmental lead (Pb) from both inhalation and ingestion, providing a record of Pb exposure over a lifetime. Questions about the effects of diagenesis and how to remove them have hampered most isotopic and elemental determinations. As a result, researchers often restrict their analyses to tooth enamel, despite its limitations. We report Pb isotopes in teeth and bones in a frontier population of 15 individuals from a late …
An X-ray fluorescence-pattern recognition analysis of pottery from an early historic hispanic settlement near Santa Fe, New Mexico
Nutritional evaluation of Marama bean (Tylosema esculentum, Fabaceae)
A Preliminary Analysis of Rio Grande Glazes of the Classic Period Using Scanning Electron Microscopy with X-Ray Fluorescence
Glaze-decorated pottery of the Classic Period from the Rio Grande Valley and environs was analyzed using a scanning electron microscope with an x-ray fluorescence detector (SEM-XRF). A cluster analysis of element composition data obtained on the decoration and slip of 57 sherds indicated that intrusive wares could be identified, that trading patterns could be illucidated, and that a source of glaze components appears to have been located near the…

Atomic Absorption for the Archaeologist
Atomic absorption spectrophotometry is a suitable, though presently little-recognized, method by which the archaeologist can obtain potentially relevant data on the elemental composition of artifacts. Its relatively low cost and the ease with which a minimally-trained technician can carry out the procedure make it particularly attractive as a routine archaeological procedure. By way of illustration the authors analyze a corpus of pottery from Pel…
