  • Promoting safer sexual practices among expectant fathers in the Lao People's Democratic Republic

Open Access•Lisa Natoli, Wendy Holmes et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2011

Men's decisions and behaviours influence the sexual, reproductive and maternal health of women and the health of their families, but men are rarely included in reproductive and maternal health care services. Men's attendance at antenatal care has the potential to prevent women from becoming infected with HIV during pregnancy and post-partum, when they are more vulnerable to infection and have a high risk of transmission to the infant. Greater inv…

  • Malnutrition-Mortality Relationships among Refugees

Phillip Nieburg, Bobbie Person-Karell et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•1992•Citada por: 2

Mortality measures are among the best objective indicators of a refugee population's recovery from the emergency phase of a crisis, as well as the best measure of the population's long term well-being. However, nutrition-related excess mortality and post-emergency phase nutritional deterioration continue to be identified in refugee relief operations. Studies in refugee and non-refugee situations have clearly established the relationship between m…

  • A Case Study of Somali Refugees in Hartisheik A Camp, Eastern Ethiopia

Michael J Toole, Michael Toole et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•1992

During the first nine months of an international assistance programme, there was a major deterioration in the nutritional status of approximately 170,000 Somali refugees in the eastern Ethiopian camp of Hartisheik A. The acute malnutrition prevalence rate among children less than 5 years of age increased from 15% in September 1988 (three months after the refugees' arrival) to 26% in March 1989. This increase in malnutrition prevalence was associa…

Open Access•Jennifer Bryce, Michael J Toole et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•1992•Citada por: 4

The facility-based assessment (FBA) method is a co-ordinated set of data collection activities, designed to determine the extent to which children are properly diagnosed and effectively treated at health facilities. Eleven African countries have conducted facility-based assessments since 1986, with support from the African Child Survival Initiative-Combatting Childhood Communicable Diseases project. Components of the FBA include observations of h…

    Open Access•Bradley A Woodruff, Michael J Toole et al.•ARTICLE•Disasters•1990•Citada por: 6•Referências: 1

Following a flood in Khartoum, Sudan, emergency disease surveillance was implemented to monitor the health status of the population. Simple, symptom-oriented case definitions for diarrheal disease, measles, respiratory disease, malaria, and jaundice were included on the report form used to collect daily counts of outpatients in a sample of both temporary and permanent clinics located in areas of the city most affected by the flood. Data collected…

  • An outbreak of scurvy in Somali refugee camps

    Open Access•Ahmed M Magan, Mohamed Warsame et al.•ARTICLE•Disasters•1983•Citada por: 8•Referências: 3

Between June and October 1982, an outbreak of scurvy occurred in the refugee camps of Somalia. An epidemiologic investigation eventually detected more than 2,000 cases. The outbreak came at a time when the relief programme had been well established and the general health status of the refugees had otherwise stabilized. We report on 72 of the cases. Joint pain of the lower extremities and gingivitis were prominent features in the majority. Hemorrh…
