An act of political warfare
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (diabetes) is the eighth leading cause of death in the United States. Diabetes disproportionately affects older adults and people of color. For older African American women, diabetes is considered a public health crisis. African American women 55 and older face higher mortality rates and more severe diabetes-related complications compared to their White counterparts. Secondary conditions such as cardiovascular disease, st…
The Graying of the Cool Pose
Active pursuit of a healthy lifestyle often requires redefining Black manhood, defying negative gender stereotypes of what it means to be a Black male. Results are described in the context of the "Cool Pose," a framework for understanding how African-American men and boys cope with systemic racial oppression and the unachievable dominant standards of masculinity in the United States. The results suggest that this framework may be less applicable …

Unending Work and the Emergence of Diabetes
Disaggregating diabetes
Interest in disaggregating diabetes into numerous subtypes is growing as patients and providers recognize the limitations of standard diabetes typologies. As anthropologists, we draw attention to how 'subtyping' may reduce stigma derived from the connection between obesity and 'type 2 diabetes'. We highlight the complexities that drive diabetes and argue that an exclusive or dominant focus on diet and obesity obfuscates other underlying risks. Ye…
Understanding the Subjective Experience of Medication Adherence for Older Urban African Americans With Type 2 Diabetes and a History of Illicit Drug Addiction
Previous drug abuse not only complicates medication adherence but is also a significant part of how older African Americans who are former drug users frame their understanding of T2D more broadly
Successful Aging Among African American Older Adults With Type 2 Diabetes
Hardship and illness in participants' lives frame their diabetes experience and notions of well-being. Providers need to be aware of the social, economic, and political lenses shaping diabetes self-management and subjective well-being
Routes to Government TB Treatment
Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major source of morbidity and mortality in Uganda. This cross-sectional study explores Ugandan women's TB treatment-seeking processes to determine the routes to effective government TB treatment among a sample of urban, semirural, and rural women. This research focuses on women in particular as Ugandan women with tuberculosis must negotiate their treatment paths in a context where women tend to be politically and econo…
A group-based intervention to increase condom use among HIV serodiscordant couples in India, Thailand, and Uganda
This study assessed the feasibility of a group-based couples intervention to increase condom use in HIV serodiscordant couples in three countries (India, Thailand and Uganda). The intervention focused on communication, problem solving, and negotiation skills. Forty-three couples enrolled in the intervention (15 in India, 14 in Thailand, and 14 in Uganda) and 40 couples completed all study activities. Participants were interviewed at baseline and …
The reliability and validity of the Modified Condom Outcome Expectancy Scale (MCOES) among an international sample of HIV-negative partners of people living with HIV/Aids
Safer sexual behaviour is vital in curbing the HlV epidemic in many developing countries where the epidemic is primarily transmitted through heterosexual sex. Reliable and valid assessment of factors related to HIV risk behaviours are important in testing behavioural theories as well as informing effective AIDS prevention programmes. The current study tests the reliability and validity of a modified version of the Condom Outcome Expectancy Scale …
