Exploring Religious Identities in 2020s China
This study explores religious identities in China by drawing representative samples in 2024 from two ideal‐typical regions, Manchuria and Guangdong. The results show that the majority (over 50%) chose “neither atheist nor religious believer,” but only 13% solely identified as atheists. At least one‐third of the population identified with a religion, with Buddhism being the largest religious identity and a considerable proportion having syncretic …
Diversity, Minority Share, and the Fertility Differential Between Turks and Han in China
While fertility differentials between ethno‐racial groups are often attributed to socioeconomic or cultural factors, an emerging scholarship emphasises the importance of context for these differentials to occur. This study examines how context‐level ethnic composition (ethnic context) shapes fertility differentials using the case of Xinjiang, China. Contextual data from the 2010 decennial census were linked with individual‐level data from the 201…

Racial disparities in Death rates and Death incidences in Xinjiang
Children’s Health and Typology of Family Integration and Regulation
This study broadens the perspective on children's health by ushering back functionalism and placing health in its social implications
Ethnic context and fertility differential in post‐Soviet Kazakhstan
Previous studies have often explained fertility differentials between racial groups by aggregate individual characteristics. Emphasizing a spatial perspective, this study argues that the fertility implications of race may depend on the ethnic composition of the local context. This study tested the explanatory power of contextual ethnic composition, measured by diversity and minority share, with the intriguing case of fertility differentials in po…
Conversion among Chinese Overseas Students in the US
After people migrate to a different religious landscape, they will have multiple candidate religions to choose from, and some people may convert to a new religion. This study argues that both individual-level characteristics and a religion's organizational traits are involved in religious conversion. Using cross-sectional samples of Chinese overseas students and scholars in the US in 2018 (n = 1911), we deployed mixed multinomial models to demons…
Associations Between Uncertainty Stress, Life Stress and Internet Addiction Among Medical Students
Objectives Internet Addiction (IA) is a growing issue predominate in adolescents and young adults. Although the effects of diverse stressors on IA have been highlighted, there is little consensus about the specific underpinnings of IA. The current study aims to investigate associations between uncertainty stress, life stress and IA among Chinese university medical students. Methods A cross-sectional survey employing multi-stage sampling was used.…
Are E-Cigarette and Tea Cigarette Gifting Behaviors Associated with Tobacco Use and Failed Quit Attempts in China
This study aims to investigate e-cigarette and tea cigarette gifting in China and their influencing factors, as well as to explore whether they were associated with tobacco use and cessation. Using a multistage sampling design, 1512 household heads from Guangdong and Shaanxi provinces were recruited for the study and filled out an online questionnaire about smoking status, social participation, e-cigarette, and tea cigarette gifting. Results show…
Health Disparities between Religious Majority and Minority
Background Scholars have found that as a multi-facet phenomenon, religion has a complicated relationship with people's health well-being. However, current research on health and religion has left a vacuum in understanding why we observe widespread health disparities between the majority and minority religious groups. Purpose The present study is aimed at two purposes. First, we conduct a cross-national comprehensive examination of the relationshi…
The toxic gift
The widespread exchange of tobacco cigarettes as a gift in some societies normalises the symbolic desirability of tobacco products and promotes smoking. Little is known about how and why people exchange toxic substances as gifts. This study argues two key factors involved in social exchange processes – reciprocity and social capital – can explain gift cigarette circulation. We conducted a multistage survey among household heads from China and mea…
Peer Association and Routine Activities in Sex Worker Patronage among Male Migrant Workers
Studies of people who buy sex often focus on psychological and personality factors with less attention paid to the role of social contexts. This study integrates the two lines of inquiry, routine activity theory and peer deviance, to examine the social process of paying for sex. We argue that deviant peer association may shape buying sex due to peers' role in shifts in the three components of routine activity theory: motivation, targets, and lack…
Uncertainty Stress, and Its Impact on Disease Fear and Prevention Behavior during the Covid-19 Epidemic in China
Objectives: We examined changing trends of uncertainty stress, and its impact on disease fear and prevention behaviors during the Chinese COVID-19 epidemic, using a prospective observational study. Methods: We employed a longitudinal design. We recruited participants for an online panel survey from chat groups on social media platforms. There were 5 waves of interviews. Information on uncertainty stress and related variables were collected via th…
Association of Excessive WeChat Use with Mental Disorders
This study provides new evidence that excessive WeChat use is associated with mental disorders. These findings underscore the importance of alerting people to the possible health risks of excessive social media use
The Two Faces of Diversity
A dominant discourse in the social sciences theorizes that religious diversity puts individuals' health at risk via interreligious hostility. However, this discourse overlooks the different subtypes of religious diversity and the moderation of political institutions. To better understand the issue of diversity and health, in this study, we distinguish between two subtypes of religious diversity-polarization and fractionalization-and argue that th…
Pathways to Buying Sex among Migrant Labors
Family bonds and deviant peers constitute two important competing forces of socialization in migrants’ social life. This study furthers the theory of family-peer relationship by arguing that migrants’ social network homogeneity shapes the development of family bonds and peer deviance and is ultimately associated with increased likelihood of sexual risk behaviors. Applying regression techniques and structural equation modeling with bootstrapped es…

Nativity Homogeneity in Social Networks and Prostitution Patronage Among Male Migrant Laborers
Previous studies have repeatedly found the association between network homogeneity based on native-place and sexual risk behaviors among migrants. However, it remains unclear why such a simple numerical property of network composition can be correlated with a sexual risk behavior. Using a dataset (n = 1591) with detailed information on the sexual behaviors among male migrant laborers in the two Chinese provinces with the highest migrant inflows, …
Decomposing Immigrants' Religious Mobility
The religious mobility of immigrants has rarely received a systematic investigation that separates the two mutually exclusive mechanisms: the structural shift that occurs due to an overall environment favorable to certain religions, and the exchange effect that occurs when people voluntarily flow between any pair of two religions. Chinese overseas students constitute the largest foreign student body in the US whose religious mobility pattern rema…
Religious Context Matters
Previous research has demonstrated that individual religious beliefs and practices may reduce the likelihood of underage alcohol consumption, but less is known about how the overall religious cultural influence of a religion may influence individual alcohol consumption behaviors. Using multilevel analyses on two waves of the National Study of Youth and Religion merged with county-level variables from the U.S. Census and the Religious Congregation…
The gendered effects of substance use on employment stability in transitional China
Substance use is often thought to harm employment prospects, an assumption challenged by the anomaly that people who use licit substances such as alcohol and tobacco are sometimes at a lower risk of unemployment. We argue that employment stability may benefit from the socialisation afforded through using licit substances, particularly in a context where licit substance use is encouraged. Furthermore, because the norms associated with substance us…
Individual and regional association between socioeconomic status and uncertainty stress, and life stress
Based on the literature review, this is the first empirical study examining the impact of SES on uncertainty stress in China and elsewhere in the world. Our research underscores the importance of decreasing socioeconomic inequalities in controlling excessive uncertainty stress
Christian Identification and Self-Reported Depression
The nexus between religion and mental health in the East has been understudied, where the coexistence of multiple religions calls for scholarly attention to religious identification. This article investigates the impact on self-reported depression of an individual's identification with Christianity in a non-Judeo-Christian and religion-regulating social setting. Taking advantage of the Chinese General Social Survey 2010, our empirical analyses su…
Together we have fun
Some scholars argue that the maintenance of social networks contributes to the lower prevalence of deviant behaviours and fewer adverse health effects among migrants. But others suggest that if migrants are embedded in homogeneous networks, such networks may enable the formation of a deviant subculture that promotes risk taking. Facing this dilemma, the present study investigates how native-place networks influence sexual risk behaviours (SRBs), …

Estimating Religious Populations with the Network Scale-Up Method
Getting accurate information on religious demographics from survey-based self-reports presents a difficult task, suffering from the biases of social desirability, personal safety concerns, and the ambiguous definitions of religious identity. The network scale-up method (NSUM) is an estimation strategy based on the enumeration of social network ties. NSUM has recently been employed to estimate the sizes of hidden populations in criminology and pub…

The aim was to produce graduates with appropriate knowledge and skills to be effective in advocating for policies that could lead to the reduction of tobacco use. Results from this initial project involving seven universities have been encouragin…
HIV/Aids-related sexual risk behaviors in male rural-to-urban migrants in China
There is a lack of research concerning the connection between HIV-related sexual risk behaviors (SRBs) and the psychological characteristics of middle-aged male migrants in China. This study was aimed at describing how psychological characteristics affected the SRBs of migrant men in two Chinese cities. A cross-sectional survey in Hangzhou and Guangzhou was used to collect sociodemographic and psychological data from male migrants over 3 age grou…
