  • Altering Experienced Utility

Patricia M West, Peter West et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Research•2004•Citada por: 5

This article examines the impact of writing stories on the evaluation of consumption objects. Generating a story creates greater liking for a painting than generating a dialogue about it. The positive impact of stories does not derive from generating more positive thoughts. Instead, stories generate fewer affective thoughts than do dialogues. • Recommendation or Evaluation? Task Sensitivity in Information Source Selection

    Andrew D Gershoff, Susan M Broniarczyk et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Research•2001•Citada por: 6•Referências: 60

Ironically, when consumers turn to an information source to assist in decision making, they are faced with the added responsibility of having to make a decision about the information source itself. A normative model is presented that shows that consumer assessment of an information source should include both the task for which an information source is sought and the appropriate probability of success for the task. A key distinction between tasks …

  • Integrating Multiple Opinions

Patricia M West, Peter West et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Research•1998•Citada por: 10

Four studies examine the process by which consumers integrate critic opinions and attribute information into their product evaluations and how critic consensus affects this process. A reference-dependent model is proposed such that consumer response to consensus depends on whether the average critic rating for an alternative is above or below an aspiration level. Consensus is shown to be preferred for alternatives above an aspiration level, where…

  • Consumption Vocabulary and Preference Formation

Patricia M West, Peter West et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Research•1996•Citada por: 15

Consumers' understanding of their own preferences can be aided by a “consumption vocabulary”—a taxonomy or framework that facilitates identifying the relation between a product's features and one's evaluation of the product. In the absence of such a vocabulary, consumers' understanding of their own preferences will require more extensive experience and may never fully develop. The effect of such a vocabulary is tested in two experiments in which …
