The Cult of CrossFit
Reveals the Christian foundations of CrossFit CrossFit in the United States has become increasingly popular, around which a fascinating culture has developed which shapes everyday life for the people devoted to it. CrossFit claims to be many things: a business, a brand, a tremendously difficult fitness regimen, a community, a way to gain salvation, and a method to survive the apocalypse. In The Cult of CrossFit , Katie Rose Hejtmanek examines how…
The Cambridge Handbook of Psychological Anthropology
Bringing together contributions from a global team of renowned scholars, this Handbook provides a comprehensive guide to the dynamic field of psychological anthropology. It is divided into five parts and includes a critical updating of the theoretical foundations for psychological anthropology, covering cognitive, psychodynamic, linguistic, and phenomenological views. It provides the first-ever lifespan perspective on human development in culture…
Conjuring and Calming Anxiety
This paper examines anxiety for elite white Americans in the contemporary United States. Using ethnographic experiences in CrossFit, I explore the relationship among anxiety, physical pain, and mental resilience in the workout regimen. I use Paul Tillich's understanding of anxiety to explain the alchemic process that transforms anxiety into fear to elicit courage during a workout, focusing on the framework of "mental fitness" provided by CrossFit…
The Anthropology of Anxiety
This introduction is part of a special section on the anthropology of anxiety. As a collection, it offers an innovative anthropological approach to anxiety as a social, political, and ontological condition rather than a clinical disorder. Each paper builds on theoretical and philosophical traditions, from Heidegger to Tillich to Lacan to Freud, to explore how anxiety inhabits fields of relations defined by radical social shifts, existential uncer…
I feel terrible and need to exercise to find any sort of joy
During COVID-19 stay-at-home orders (SaHOs), people faced drastic shifts in their work and home lives. These shifts, in combination with the temporary closure of gyms and fitness centers, led to exercise-routine disruption. We conducted a survey to assess how people were affected by SaHOs in terms of exercise-routine change, feelings about exercise, perceived physical and mental health, as well as exercise-routine plans once SaHOs were lifted. In…
Missing the Gym
Fitness Fanatics
Physical fitness has a long history in the United States. Currently, functional fitness has emerged as a popular, novel method of exercising. Based on years of ethnographic research on a branded version of functional fitness, I argue this form of exercise is an audit system and culture, initiated by the creators of the brand itself, implemented in the gyms, and governed by the participants. This article illustrates that such an exercise regimen i…
"Care, Closeness, and Becoming "Better
In the United States, young people are remanded to psychiatric custody for the institutionalized treatment of mental illness, behavior disorders, and emotional disturbances, and forced to participate in this therapeutic system. Anthropological investigations of therapeutic process have focused on individuals actively seeking and engaging in treatment or a therapeutic process. Does transformation require a person fully accept the therapeutic syste…
