During the US military presence in Haiti from 1915 to 1934, insurgent Haitians and US forces fought each other. As US troops' violence escalated on armed Haitian guerrilla fighters, unarmed citizens devised new systems of protest-silence and the ruse of obliviousness. This article analyzes both acts as unique and effective tools. Haitians brandished them as weapons against the violence they experienced under US imperialism
