    Sharrumma is a god of unclear character who enjoyed some prominence in the Hurrian‐ influenced cult of the Hittite Empire period, particularly in Kizzuwatna/Cilicia and northern Syria. As demonstrated by his presence in theophoric names, his worship in southern Anatolia continued into the Hellenistic age.

    Shawushka is a prominent Hurrian goddess of sexuality, warfare, and magic identified early on with Mesopotamian Ištar. Most information concerning her has been found at the Hittite capital Hattusa, where her cult was introduced in the fifteenth century bce from Hurrian‐influenced Kizzuwatna/Cilicia.

    Owing to a paucity of relevant sources, we know rather little about Hittite medical practice, but it is clear that native therapies relied as much on magic as upon what moderns would recognize as medicine. Practitioners from Babylonia and Egypt, whose expertise was acknowledged to be superior to that of local physicians, were welcome at the Hittite court.

    Recently Professor Harald Ingholt generously donated to the Yale Babylonian Collection a Hittite cylinder seal from the empire period, which has received the inventory number YBC 16575. The piece, which is of copper and measures 24·5 × 11 mm., is in excellent condition and shows little sign of wear – see Plate XX and Figure 1.
