Desert agricultural systems at EBA Jawa (Jordan)
The Chalcolithic/Early Bronze Age Hillfort Phenomenon in the Northern Badia
The basalt and limestone desert of the Jawa hinterland in NE Jordan has been the focus of intensive archaeological research for the past six years. Surveys revealed abundant evidence for Chalcolithic or Early Bronze Age activities in this region. The preliminary results of these investigations have already led to a change in the earlier perception of this region and especially the basalt desert. Among the major discoveries are the identification …
Milestones for a tentative chronological framework for the late prehistoric colonization of the basalt desert (north-eastern Jordan)
The discovery, in recent years, of a number of Chalcolithic/Early Bronze Age hillfort sites east of Jawa, provides a new perspective on settlement activities in the hinterland of Jawa. Recent surveys and soundings at two of these hillfort sites, namely Tulul al-Ghusayn and Khirbet al-Ja'bariya, have provided a series of AMS dates which are considered here in relation to the recently published first set of AMS dates from Jawa itself. Of particular…
A ‘marginal’ region with many options
In the course of the last four years, surveys in the eastern hinterland of Jawa in the Northern Badia of Jordan have revealed abundant traces of Chalcolithic/Early Bronze Age socio-economic activities. These range from the exploitation of large flint mines with associated export-oriented cortical flake production, through abundant indications of ancient pastoralism, to evidence for irrigation agriculture. Additionally, settlements inhabited all y…
Conclusion
The contributions gathered within this special edition of Levant demonstrate very clearly how recent archaeological research has transformed our understanding of late prehistoric occupation and act...
Recent research on the Late Prehistory of the arid regions in Jordan

Chalcolithic/Early Bronze Age Flint Mines in the Northern Badia
"Southwest Asian Late Chalcolithic/Early Bronze Age Demand for "Big-Tools
Cortical scrapers ("fan scrapers") and large blades ("Canaanean blades") belong to the characteristic larger-sized types in Southwest-Asian lithic tool assemblages in the fourth to early third millennium (Late Chalcolithic/Early Bronze Age). However, the provenance of the raw material of the respective tools and the locality of their production are almost unknown; related workshops and mines have rarely been identified. Following the presentation…
