Heat Adaptation Benefits for Vulnerable groups In Africa (Habvia)
Pan African Clinical Trials Registry (PACTR) PACTR202401521630856, version 1. Retrospectively registered on January 12, 2024
Maternal Sociodemographic Factors, Adiposity, and Pregnancy Outcomes Among Preterm Deliveries Admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
In addition to adiposity, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status may be associated with more severe preterm delivery (lower GA). While this exploratory study is limited by the small sample size, our findings highlight the impact of sociodemographic factors on maternal obesity and severity of pregnancy complications in the context of preterm birth with NICU admission
Utility of silhouette showcards to assess adiposity in three countries across the epidemiological transition
The Pulvers’ silhouette showcards provide a non-invasive and easy-to-use way of assessing an individual’s body size perception using nine silhouette shapes. However, their utility across different populations has not been examined. This study aimed to assess: 1) the relationship between silhouette perception and measured anthropometrics, i.e., body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-height-ratio (WHtR), and 2) the ability to predic…
Variability in energy expenditure is much greater in males than females
In mammals, trait variation is often reported to be greater among males than females. However, to date, mainly only morphological traits have been studied. Energy expenditure represents the metabolic costs of multiple physical, physiological, and behavioral traits. Energy expenditure could exhibit particularly high greater male variation through a cumulative effect if those traits mostly exhibit greater male variation, or a lack of greater male v…
The associations between alcohol intake and cardiometabolic risk in African-origin adults spanning the epidemiologic transition
While several CM risk factors were associated with alcohol consumption, the associations were inconsistent and varied widely across five international cohorts of African-origin. Future studies should focus on understanding the individual site-related effects
Sustained high levels of physical activity lead to improved performance among “Race Across the USA” athletes
OBJECTIVE: To investigate physiological and performance adaptations associated with extremely high daily sustained physical activity levels, we followed six runners participating in the 2015 Race Across the USA. Participants completed over 42.2 km a day for 140 days, covering nearly 5,000 km. This analysis examines the improvement in running speed and potential adaptation in mean submaximal heart rate (SHR) throughout the race. METHODS: Data were…
Gut microbiota, short chain fatty acids, and obesity across the epidemiologic transition
Registered NCT03378765 Date first posted: December 20, 2017
The Heat Is On
Despite evidence that youth gain weight disproportionately over the summer months, few studies examine contributing obesogenic behaviors. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, this study examined associations between summertime dietary intake patterns and executive function among 79 low-income urban minority early adolescent girls (ages 9-13 years). Participants were interviewed via the multiple-pass 24-hour dietary recall method and completed indi…
Cardiovascular risk status of Afro-origin populations across the spectrum of economic development
These data provide a comprehensive estimate of cardiovascular risk across a range of countries at differing stages of social and economic development and demonstrate the heterogeneity in the character and degree of emerging cardiovascular risk. Severe hypercholesterolemia, as characteristic in the US and much of Western Europe at the onset of the coronary epidemic, is unlikely to be a feature of the cardiovascular risk profile in these countries …

The social patterning of risk factors for noncommunicable diseases in five countries
In conclusion, the distribution of NCD-RFs was socially patterned in these populations at different stages of the epidemiological transition, but associations between SES and NCD-RFs differed substantially according to risk factor, population, sex, and SES indicator. These findings emphasize the need to assess and integrate the social patterning of NCD-RFs in NCD prevention and control programs in LMICs
Association of car ownership and physical activity across the spectrum of human development
PA levels are similar across all study sites except Jamaica, despite very different levels of socioeconomic development. Not owning a car in the US is associated with especially high levels of MVPA. As car ownership becomes prevalent in the developing world, strategies to promote alternative forms of active transit may become important
A comparison of indices of glucose metabolism in five black populations
Obesity, metabolic risk, and other potential determinants vary significantly between populations at differing stages of the epidemiologic transition, requiring tailored public health policies to address local population characteristics
A mixed ecologic-cohort comparison of physical activity & weight among young adults from five populations of African origin
These analyses suggest that persons with greater adiposity tend to engage in less PA, although the associations are weak and the direction of causality cannot be inferred because measurements are cross-sectional. Longitudinal data will be required to elucidate direction of association
Comparisons of intensity-duration patterns of physical activity in the US, Jamaica and 3 African countries
While there is some association for PA with obesity, this relationship is inconsistent across the epidemiologic transition and suggests that PA policy recommendations should be tailored for each environment
Hydroxyvitamin D levels in African American and Nigerian women
OBJECTIVES: African Americans (AA) have substantially lower levels of circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) than whites. We compared population-based samples of 25(OH)D in women of African descent from Nigeria and metropolitan Chicago. METHODS: One hundred women of Yoruba ethnicity from southwest Nigeria and 94 African American women from metropolitan Chicago were recruited and compared using a standardized survey protocol and the same labora…
Protocol for the modeling the epidemiologic transition study
METS will provide insight on the relative contribution of physical activity and diet to excess weight, age-related weight gain and incident glucose impairment in five populations' samples of young adults at different stages of economic development. These data should be useful for the development of empirically-based public health policy aimed at the prevention of obesity and associated chronic diseases
Assessing Physical Activity and its Relationship to Cardiovascular Risk Factors
The magnitude of the gap between self-report and accelerometry activity must be a result of either a vast social acceptability bias in reporting or inaccurate measurement with accelerometry. Therefore, due to the low validity of self reported PA data for epidemiologic research, it is pertinent to encourage the use of valid, objective methods to assess PA
Relative height and weight among children and adolescents of rural southwestern Nigeria
Low relative height and underweight occur in a large proportion of children and adolescents in rural Nigeria, with the lowest relative heights and weights occurring in mid-adolescence and among males
Rapid increases in obesity in Jamaica, compared to Nigeria and the United States
Weight change in sample cohorts from a middle-income country was greater than in cohorts from either of the low- or high-income countries. The steep trajectory of weight gain in Jamaica, relative to Nigeria and the US, is most likely attributable to the accelerating effects of the cultural and behavioral shifts which have come to bear on transitional societies
