The Anthropology of Development and Globalization
The Anthropology of Development and Globalization: From Classical Political Economy to Contemporary Neoliberalism. Marc Edelman and Angelique Haugerud, eds. Oxford: Blackwell Publishers, 2005. 406 pp
Political Anthropology
In the foreword to the first edition, renowned anthropologist Victor Turner wrote that this book was a succinct and lucid account of the sporadic growth of political anthropology over the past four decades . . . the introduction we have all been waiting for. Unique in its field, this book offers a comprehensive overview of political anthropology, including its history, its major research findings, and its theoretical concerns both past and presen…
Anthropology of Globalization
Lewellen gives us the first analytic overview of an important new subject area in a field that has long been identified with the study of relatively bounded communities. Globalization refers to the increasing flows of trade, finance, culture, ideas, and people brought about by the sophisticated technology of communications and travel and by the worldwide spread of neoliberal capitalism. Unlike dependency theory and world systems analysis, which t…

Political Anthropology
The Hypoglycemia-Aggression Hypothesis
In a critical evaluation of work by Ralph Bolton on the relationship between hypoglycemia and aggression among the Qolla of Peru, Ted Lewellen has argued that the Qolla are not highly aggressive, that they have been the victims of pseudoscientific stereotyping and prejudice, that they are not especially prone to problems in glucose homeostasis, and that whatever aggression they display can be explained in large part by their consumption of alcoho…
Coca Chewing and High-Altitude Stress
Because the main present-day centres of coca chewing are in the high altiplano regions of Peru and Bolivia, it has been widely assumed that the habit evolved primarily as a response to the stresses of life at high altitudes. When archaeological, ethnohistorical, and botanical sources of evidence are considered, a different emphasis emerges. Before the European conquest, coca was chewed everywhere from Nicaragua to Chile and at all altitudes. This…
Aggression and Hypoglycemia in the Andes
In a Stirling-award winning article, Ralph Bolton offered a psychophysiological explanation for the notorious levels of aggression among the "Qolla" (Quechua and Aymara) Indians of the Peruvian altiplano. The long-standing anthropological characterization of these peasants as pathologically aggressive was supported by Bolton's finding that the community of Incawatana had one of the highest murder rates on record. He hypothesized that mild hypogly…

Deviant Religion and Cultural Evolution
The role that deviant religions can play in the processes of cultural evolution has been largely overlooked by anthropologists. Among the Aymara Indians of Peru, a once ostricized and persecuted group of Seventh Day Adventists has assumed leadership as the community system is transformed from a subsistence agriculture economy to a money economy. To explain this emergence of a Protestant elite in a predominantly Catholic society, a Weberian hypoth…
