En el mes de setiembre de 1870 se produjo una rebelión de culíes chinos que se prolongó a varias haciendas del valle de Pativilca. Todo comenzó en la hacienda de Araya en la parte media del valle, y rápidamente se extendió a otros fundos. Inicialmente fueron cien los chinos sublevados.
