Change the world farm by farm
In European animal welfare inspection on farms and at slaughter, inspectors encounter moral challenges that reveal the paradox at the heart of animal welfare. Against the harsh realities of industrial agriculture, not only are their idealized notions of animal wellbeing unrealizable, but inspectors are instrumental in perpetuating standards of welfare that they feel are unsatisfactory and at times inadequate. An ethnographic study across four Eur…
Farmer Identity
Slaughterhouse tours in Denmark
This article examines how tours of an industrial pig slaughterhouse reinforce the continued enfoldment of Danish pigs into the fabrication of Danish national identity, an enfoldment that underpins the formulation of subjects, human as well as more-than-human. A discourse analysis that weaves ethnographic moments from the tours and tour narratives along with historical and literary influences on Danish national identity and current debates on "Dan…
Killing the impulse to save Marius
The euthanasia of Marius, an 18-month-old giraffe at Copenhagen Zoo in 2014, triggered intense global debate about zoo management practices. This article examines how the zoo's explicit display of clinical detachment through public dissection reveals the complex dynamics of human-animal relations in contemporary conservation institutions. Drawing on 17 months of ethnographic fieldwork, I demonstrate how zoos cultivate 'fascination' as a carefully…
Animal geographies of industrial animal agriculture in the Pandemic Era
Amidst the capitalist logics governing life and death in the industrial production of pigs and poultry in Denmark, we confront the ethico-methodological challenges of conducting multispecies research in this time of increased pathogen emergence and transmission: the ‘Pandemic Era’. Drawing on our empirical insights, we contend that worldly animal geographies in the Pandemic Era are constituted by biological and existential insecurity, underscorin…
Protesting the future
Recent farmer protests across Europe demonstrate the complex challenges facing modern agriculture. This article examines the human story behind these protests. It explores how farmers’ roles have changed from respected innovators and providers to a group caught between environmental demands, economic pressures and shifting societal expectations. Neoliberal policies, green regulations and new workforce patterns have precipitated an identity crisis…
Dissecting the ethics of choreographed encounters with animal death in the zoo
Choreographed encounters with death in Copenhagen Zoo, such as school and public dissections, emphasize the importance of touch and are underpinned by the moral imperative to understand the nature of life and death. Such encounters are framed by zoo educators as contributing to a deeper environmental awareness. Taking the role of dead animals in the educational activities of Copenhagen Zoo as the focus, this article examines the underpinning ideo…
Care and its discontents
Through ethnographic attunement to the emotionally complex relationships between zookeepers and nonhuman animals, commodification in the political economy of Copenhagen Zoo produces a form of care characterized by coercive cooperation. Amidst the coercive constraints of captivity, keepers depict relationships as ranging from those of explicit coercion, where the animals are made to work, to those of cooperation, where the animals are perceived as…
Sonic methodologies for more-than-human geographies
Sound is an established parameter in animal welfare studies. A sonic ethnographic study of a traditional slaughterhouse in south-west England reveals how animal welfare, conceived as 'respect for the animal' at slaughter, is based on sonically attuned practices. Such sonic engagement distinguishes the traditional slaughterhouse from industrial operations and works to dispel the stigma of killing for the workers. A sonic approach centers the more-…
On “Finishing
This visual memoir probes the tensions and contradictions that inflect the commodity‐based relationship between a farmer and his cattle on an Irish farm. A methodological exploration of how to attend to the politics of care that animate multispecies relationships on the farm, this article examines relations of intimacy, care, and contradiction materialized in the structural manipulation of bodies for economic purposes. The attentive focus on the …
Porcine Words
I have been studying slaughterhouses for the last seven years, and I still remember the first time I stood in the chill of the kill floor of a cattle slaughterhouse as the saws screamed, the machines thudded, and the workers roared to one another above the din. I felt exfoliated—compelled to return, to document, and to transform (Dave 2014; Mc Loughlin 2019). María Elena García (2019) describes the tragedy of multispecies ethnography as the ethno…
Knowing cows
This ‘emotionography’ of the slaughterhouse elucidates how the identities of both human and non‐human individuals are constructed by line and lairage workers. Hegemonic masculine ideals that underpin slaughterhouse work mean that the emotions of workers as well as the emotional experience of cattle are either denied, diminished or repressed. Based on fieldwork in an Irish slaughterhouse, I articulate how the industrial slaughter of animals entang…
SaveBenjy
This paper explores the #SaveBenjy Crowdfunder campaign to save a Charolais bull in the Republic of Ireland who expressed sexual interest only in weanling bulls and not the heifers he was expected to impregnate. The prominence and popularity of #SaveBenjy is anything but coincidental. In May 2015, the referendum on gay marriage sought to legalize same-sex marriage. Consequently, #SaveBenjy provides a timely lens through which to view Irish attitu…
